California will run out of cash by early March if the state does not take swift action to find $3.3 billion through payment delays and borrowing, according to a letter state Controller John Chiang sent to state lawmakers today.

The announcement is surprising since lawmakers previously believed the state had enough cash to last through the fiscal year that ends in June.

The once-booming town, like hundreds of others at the edge of major metropolitan areas across the country, is also facing stark changes in its demographic mix, going in a few decades from a small, overwhelmingly white city to a much larger, ethnically diverse one where whites make up a third of the population. Fault lines have opened, with some residents worrying that neighborhoods are inundated with crime, and others seeing racism.

Mayor R. Rex Parris has contended for years that the area has been treated as a “dumping ground” for the poor of Los Angeles County. He has repeatedly said that Lancaster should be “waging a war” against the Section 8 program, which provides housing vouchers to low-income families, because there are disproportionately more recipients living in the area than in the rest of the county. It is a “problem that is crushing our community,” he said.

Now, civil rights groups have filed a federal lawsuit accusing Lancaster and neighboring Palmdale of unfairly singling out Latino and black residents who use Section 8 vouchers to help pay rent. The residents, they say, face unannounced visits from sheriff’s deputies and county housing agents, as well as aggressive surveillance from neighbors. The investigations, the lawsuit charges, are thinly veiled efforts to have the residents’ vouchers revoked.

I want to understand. Does anyone know any of the local school board members?

Looks like we may need to vote them out. Or not. Please explain.

Canadian Family Fights to Keep Boy's Breathing Tube in Place

What are your opinions of this?

The Canadian family of a 13-month-old boy clinging to life support has defied a court order to remove the boy’s breathing tube and now is looking to an American hospital for what experts say would be a miracle recovery.

The boy, Joseph Maraachli, has been in a vegetative state at a hospital in London, Ontario, since last fall. He’s been treated for a neurodegenerative disease that doctors ruled leaves no hope for the boy.

If you truly are pro-choice, then why don't you let the baby be born so he/she can make the decision whether or not to be killed?

You were given the opportunity to live.

I even numbered them so you will not get lost. Here it is again:

I have a question for those on this website calling Councilwoman Marquez an idiot. I will make it real simple so you do not get confused. AV Town Crier, dianabw, mattkeltner, etc…who are concurring with the post that she is an idiot: Please post on this blog 1) How well do you know her? 2) How many years have you known her? 3) How much time have you actually spent with her to get to know her? If you can’t answer these simple questions with any reasonable response, this exposes the frauds you all may be.

"Runner said she is prepared to participate in two debates - Feb. 2 in Santa Clarita and Feb. 3 in Lancaster - with Parker, though he has not confirmed either date."

Could someone from Mr. Parker's campaign confirm these debates. He challenged her to debate and has not confirmed the dates yet.

Please do not be afraid of debates. "I think that the problem in that issue is the word 'marriage,' and as a deacon in my church I have personal views, but I'm also a sworn Justice of the Peace, so I was one of the ones that married some of the first couples here in the Antelope Valley."

To do something against his "personal religious views" (my words, he just says that he has "personal views") shows me that he may not stand up for what he believes in.

The article was interesting. It is calling into question the matter of his being sworn in as Justice of the Peace.

Can Mr. Parker or someone supporting him find out where/when he was sworn in to solemnize couples?

Truth is a good thing. It should be the basis of our decision on election day.

Was Darren Parker Retired or Removed from AT&T

I heard a rumor from someone at work that Darren Parker was not retired, but was let go. That disturbed me and I
want to make sure the truth gets out.

Needless to say, this disturbed me.

Does anyone know if this is true or not? I wonder if any of his co-workers can speak up.

The truth is what we should be making our voting decision on, not rumors. I did find his LinkedIn profile where it does state that he was retired:

------------------------
Antelope Valley Transit Authority’s budgets reveal that they increased their spending on salaries while other agencies were freezing wages or reducing them.

In 2005-2009 the amount spent on wages, salaries and benefits rose by a staggering 333 percent (from $676,529 to $2,258,537) while the actual annual vehicle revenue miles decreased by 6 percent.

While the cost of materials and supplies purchased by the AVTA stayed the same, and purchased transportation from AVTA’s contractor rose by $1 million, the category “other operating expenses” showed an increase of 500 percent (from $230,873 to $1,243,775). It was in this category that many of the disputed credit card purchases made by managers were discovered.

I appreciate the stand on embracing diverse LEGAL residents and placing an emphasis on LEGAL citizens, not illegals. It is about time the whole country embrace and enforce the laws in this country. If you don't like them, then do your best to change them. I support everyone's right to agree or disagree.

It took conviction to pass the resolution. Thank you Lancaster!
