I brought this up on the morning show with Ray and Amir earlier today....

America is in debt, this is fact. The dollar is facing trouble, this, also, is true. The euro is at an all-time high in value against the dollar at something like $1.38 per 1 euro. Now, one theory of the purpose of this is having to do with how the US Treasury prints money without anything real to back it up, so the value is dropping.

Now here's the question I posed:
If the American government sees the dollar collapsing, what makes them think that this new amero will be any different?

Now, Ray said this morning that the amero is backed by gold.

So the discussion I want to see is...would this transission of currency be to our benefit? If our dollar has no value behind it, would the amero be the way to go to boost our economy up and make the American currency the most sought after again?

There's a bulletin going around MySpace showing how 'nice' and 'friendly' pit bulls are, in protest of the bill before LA County legislation.

FIRST OFF....I just wanna say that whoever originally posted this is OBVIOUSLY a pit bull supporter, but they're also COMPLETELY MISINFORMED. They thought the bill was, first of all, in front of STATE legislation, but it's not...it's for the county of LA. Secondly, the person thought it was to EUTHANIZE pit bulls. That is also untrue. The bill started out to spay/neuter all pit bulls in the county of LA. But our WUSSY-ASS congress decided to wimp out and give all dogs equal rights...(ridiculous) so it turned into a bill to spay/neuter ALL dogs unless under special circumstances stated in the bill, such as if you're a breeder or such. Right, cause Chihuahuas are SO deadly. pfft....

So when I saw this bulletin, I flipped. I work on a NewsTalk radio station, in LA county, so I KNOW what's going on. I replied to my friend, who reposted this bulletin, with this.....

I agree with the bill. And it's not to euthanize pit bulls. It's to spay and neuter them. And it's not just for pit bulls, but for ALL dogs unless specially specified by the bill. ALSO...this bill is NOT for the state, but for the county of LA. This will make the dogs calmer. Pit bulls have a chemical in their brain that lies dormant, usually. But then sometimes, the majority of the time, it can spark and it literally drives the dog insane, and it starts attacking people. Wouldn't you want to do your part to prevent that? It's not all about the owners. That's a bunch of crock.

Some pit bulls live happy, great lives. Their owners love them and treat them well. And they STILL attack someone for no reason. It's an insanity gene...inherent in ALL PIT BULLS. They are BAD dogs. Rotts are the same way. One news story I had the misfortune of hearing went like this:
A little girl, like an infant, was being babysat by her mom's sister. She took the girl over to her neighbor's house...where lived a pit bull. A nice, female pit bull, friendly and loving. Sometime during the visit, the dog attacked the baby for NO REASON and mauled her face...removing her ear. After the dog was destroyed, an autopsy found the baby's ear in the dog's stomach.
Doctor's were unable to reattach it. She will live her life out without an ear, scarred and disfigured because of a "nice, friendly" dog whose never had any previous history of violence. NO. Pit Bulls are DANGEROUS.

DO! NOT! BELIEVE! THAT! BULLETIN!

There are SO MANY CASES of the "nice friendly neighborhood" pit bull just ATTACKING innocent people.

An old woman in Quartz Hill LOST HER ARM to a pit bull in her front yard by the "nice" pit bull who JUMPED OVER THE FENCE to attack her. A very bloody scene that was.

In Lancaster, a pit bull got to a baby, about 7-8 months old, was attacked. Tossed around like a BEACH BALL by the FAMILY pit bull who would "never hurt anything." That baby died.

In Lake LA, a boy lost a couple fingers to an attacking pit bull, belonging to their cousin. Again..."would never hurt anyone."

Leona Valley, a family walking down the street...a pit bull jumped over a 5 FOOT FENCE so it could attack the little girl. A neighbor saw, came out and shot the dog, saving the family.

In Acton, a lady was riding her horse down the road in a rural area when a pit bull attacked the horse, BRINGING IT DOWN. The horse had to be destroyed because of the extensive damage done by the dog. A teenager saw what was happening and shot the dog, killing it.

IN EVERY SINGLE CASE...THE OWNER OF THE DOG SAID THAT THE DOG WAS NICE AND FRIENDLY AND WOULD NEVER HURT ANYONE!!!

Well these people were hurt. Some killed. By a dog who went insane because of a chemical imbalance in the brain.

So why not pass the bill to have all pit bulls (and other dogs) spayed or neutered? I think it would be a great idea. ASK YOURSELF...what's more important...the genitalia of a dog or the life of a baby who is at the mercy of a vicious animal?

THE EVIL OF BOOKS

Okay, as some of you who listen to the Russ & Bob show may know, I'm extremely upset at the Wilsona School District for the board of trustees' decision to ban, yes BAN, 23 books from their library simply because of "subjective" content (which, if the trustees actually read the books, they'd realize how harmless it is).

The board is blatantly holding the children back. There is absolutely no doubt about this. It's fact. By not reading everything they can, the students at Vista San Gabriel Elementary School library will not be learning all that they can.

The board of trustees decision to ban 23 books from a list of +parent-approved+ books, 63 titles in length, is WRONG.

QUOTE: "I'm not happy because I approved some of the books." - Danielle Sweeney, a parent.

Even the school librarian was upset by the trustees' decision! Jackie Livingstone said that she thinks the students should have as much variety they can in reading choices. This is the +first+ time in the entire five years Livingstone has been a libarian that the board rejected ANY books.

I agree with Livingstone. I believe that the students themselves should decide what they read, NOT SOME BOARD OF SHELTERED, PRETENTIOUS PRUDES.

I have something very, very important to say about this:

+This is why older students hate reading. This is why students grades go down in high school. This is the whole reason that the general IQ and performance in students is DECLINING.+

The students are TOLD to read something that they may not want to read. They are limited in their CHOICE to read, kept from what actually interests them. Therefore, after years of being told what to read and after years of adults not nurturing that curiosity and interest in reading...they become angry and hateful toward reading. THIS IS TRUE.

Many, many high school students do not like to read. Hell, a large number probably can't read at all. I can tell you, without a doubt, that most older kids who read today, have been reading since a very young age...and were supported in their desire to read and absorb all that knowledge.

Let's break this down a bit....

I have not seen a complete list of all 23 books that have been rejected, so forgive me if I'm missing something important, but what I say here will probably stand with those books as well.

There is one book I agree with. Yes, I do have some apprehension with young kids, mainly between the ages of five and seven, with the latest Harry Potter book. "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" is violent, I agree. It's a very dark book that involves evil characters whose sole ambition is gaining power over the wizarding community. I can understand the board's choice in keeping that book out of the elementary school library. However, "Clifford the Big Red Dog" is entirely appropriate for second, third and even fourth graders.

Okay, so the board's reasoning for the Clifford books they rejected is because it is bilingual. What, so we're against teaching Spanish now? Oh, no I see...the board feels that Spanish isn't part of their curriculum and they don't want the children to become confused when they try to read the book. Because we all know that when children who speak English open a bilingual book, they're gonna try their damnedest to read that Spanish that they don't know.

Rapunzel was rejected. I'm not sure what version of the story it is, but isn't Rapunzel the princess with the long who was rescued by a knight who had to climb her hair up the tower? Is the board scared that this'll teach boys to climb some girl's hair? Or that they'll go out behind the school and try fight that dragon back there, thinking they'll be a hero? We wouldn't want our kids to out and try to fight dragons...that's just not a good idea. I hear they breathe fire.

Artemis Fowl, two books in the series, were rejected. The series is centered around a boy-genius of the title name who is described in reviews as a criminal mastermind. I have read a bit of the first book, and I agree that Artemis is a fairly sadistic and cruel individual. And his goal in the first installment is to reclaim his family's lost fortune...in other words, self-gratification and possibly greed. I can see where the board is coming from with this decision. Here's a short excerpt from chapter one of "Artemis Fowl":http://artemisfowl.com :

"You are wearing handmade loafers, a silk shirt, and three gold signet rings. Your English has a tinge of Oxford about it, and your nails have the soft sheen of the recently manicured. You are not a waiter. You are our contact Nguyen Xuan, and you have adopted this pathetic disguise to discreetly check for weaponry."

Nguyen's shoulders sagged. "It is true. Amazing."

"Hardly. A ragged apron does not a waiter make."

Nguyen sat, pouring some mint tea into a tiny china cup.

"Let me fill you in on the weapons status," continued Artemis. "I am unarmed. But Butler here, my . . . ah . . . butler, has a Sig Sauer in his shoulder holster, two shrike- throwing knives in his boots, a derringer two-shot up his sleeve, garrotte wire in his watch, and three stun grenades concealed in various pockets. Anything else, Butler?"

"The cosh, sir."

"Oh, yes. A good old ball bearing cosh stuffed down his shirt."

That is an example of Artemis' character...at age 12. I agree, he's a sadistic bastard and not a very nice character for elementary school children to identify with. Perhaps this book should wait for middle school.

Let me get something out of the way.... I agree and support the board's right and privelage to deny books. It's their job to make sure the students don't read things like Stephen King or any other inappropriate book. What I disagree with is their choice in titles they have rejected and their bass-ackwards reasoning behind it.

If the board of trustees said they banned Harry Potter from the bookshelf because it's violent and they disagree with how dark it is and how the hero is tormented throughout almost the entire book and that that might provoke feelings and thoughts that the district does not wish to expose their students to...if they said that...I would completely support their decision in rejecting it. HOWEVER...that is not the case.

One of the board members, Marlene Olivarez, actually said that they banned "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" because it is FANTASY.

GOD FORBID OUR CHILDREN READ FANTASTIC STORIES. No, extraordinary worlds filled with magic and amazing species and mysteries beyond that of this world and, yes, even a hint of danger...those are horrible, evil, EVIL stories that have NO PLACE in the hands of a child.

Children thrive on creativity and imagination, unless you're one of those horrible parents who do everything in your power to supress that and squeeze the very life out of that inner child. Yes, I said it. Got a problem? Children need that amazing world with the magic and the stories that expand their mind and excercise that imagination...it allows them to grow in body, mind and character.

Here's what gets me.... The board says that the main reason behind their purge of books is that they are trying to stick to a "Character Counts" curriculum. But...here's the clincher, how are the kids supposed to know which kind of character counts more when they aren't exposed to which character they shouldn't emulate? You can't have good without bad, because without bad...good doesn't exist for a lack of something to be good compared to.
(Yes, that was worded weird. Read it a couple of times and you'll get it)
Guess what, board of trustees...ALL kinds of character count. Even bad, or (gasp!) +evil+ characters! For without them, how are the kids supposed to know who the good character is?

You +can't+ shelter them based on what YOU are familiar with. One trustee, Patricia Greene, says "+I don't know+ if it's upholding 'Character Counts.' I want to be sure it's promoting what we are upholding. +I approved books that I'm familiar with the content.+"

THEN +GET+ FAMILIAR!

You know what this means? THEY DIDN'T READ THE BOOKS THEY REJECTED!
They don't even know if they're appropriate or not because they didn't read them! +THEY DIDN'T READ THEM!+

This BLOWS my mind!! I cannot believe that they have the AUDACITY to reject books based on CONJECTURE! Whatever happened to that old saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover"? The parents read and approved ALL 68 of the books on the list submitted to the board.

QUOTE: "I don't understand why they don't think they are appropriate. +I read them with my fifth-grade daughter and didn't find anything inappropriate to read with her.+" - Danielle Sweeney, parent.

Perhaps it's a religious issue. Yes, I'm going to bring this up, because it needs to be known.

Many people aren't comfortable with the whole witchcraft and wizardry thing, thinking it unholy or blasphemous or what-have-you. Perhaps some people believe that reading Harry Potter or other "witchy" books will lead children into a world of occultism and sacrificial rituals to an ungodly deity.

Perhaps some people are out of their freaking minds.

It's fiction. Let's get this straight.... +Fiction.+ There is no such thing as wizards and casting spells and the devil and all that stuff. You can't cast a spell on someone to get them to do what you want. Stirring potions in couldrons won't bring you anything! It's all superstitial fiction! The Harry Potter books have been written for the enjoyment of kids and adults alike, as most books are. I understand that, if the students still want to read these books, they can go to the local public library and check them out there.

Well, how about this:

We eliminate the middle man and drop some of our more ridiculous moral barriers. First of all, the board of trustees (whether it's their right to reject books or not) should have read each and every one of those books on the list. That is a fact. It was WRONG to just plain ban the 23 books on the sole basis of what the title or what reviews suggest the book is about.

I'm wrapping this up here, so try to stick with me. I know it's gone on for some time, but this needs to be said.

Limiting our children in what they read will prove detrimental to their growing and learning. Not all children are interested in reading the same thing as you think they are. You are somewhat responsible for what they get ahold of to read...but you are not responsible for what they are interested in, or wish to read. That is their choice, and their choice alone. Like I said before, if you force a selection upon children for long enough, they will become bitter and uninterested in reading altogether.

Is that what you want for your children? To never read with joy and excitement again? Well, if it happens, one group of people you can point to for blame (and there are more) is the board of trustees.

High-Speed Pursuit Ends In Arrest
California Highway Patrol pursued a Honda yesterday, ultimately lasting over an hour.

LA County CHP officers tried to pull over a white Honda Civic on the South 14 just south of Ward Road for speeding yesterday morning at 8:06am. The driver did not pull over, and the pursuit ensued.

CHP officers followed the Civic through the Antelope Valley down the 14 Freeway, into Newhall, and eventually down into Ventura County, where the chase was then transfered to the Ventura CHP.

Finally, at 9:12am (over an hour after the pursuit began), CHP officers conducted a "pit" manuever, which spun out the Honda and ended the chase. Deputies arrested the driver, 16 year-old Dustin J. Johnson, of Simi Valley, who did not have a driver's license.

Then, after writing this, I got on MySpace, hoping to find Mr. Johnson. Sure enough.... Here's the link to his MySpace profile:

"Dustin J. Johnson":http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=33926871

Upon seeing the things on his profile, I could not help but laugh. Obviously, this 16 year-old thinks very highly of himself, that he's so tough and such a big man. I wonder if he thinks that now, sitting in jail for driving, and speeding, without a license.

This is the sad part of the world, where kids think that they can break the law and get away from the police. It doesn't happen, folks. There is no getting away. So, to Mr. Johnson, nice try, but next time...you might want to pull over. Or, now this might not make sense, you could (stay with me now...)

NOT DRIVE WITHOUT A LICENSE!!

Uncontrollable Violence?

What's with today's youth? Can anyone tell me, seriously? I'm not looking for sarcastic comments here, or solutions that are outrageous and would never happen/work. I want some serious answers here. Cause this is a lot of bull.

My whole rant on this began way back in April when Greg Harris killed Jeremy Rourke. Killed. +Killed+. Not hurt, not hit...killed. Jeremy will never breathe, walk, speak, laugh, love, read, write, play, learn, teach or LIVE ever again. He's gone. At a ripe old age of 15. Yeah, he lived a long, full life.

Now, we see Shane Jacoby. He's kicked, IN THE FACE, by another boy wearing cleats! CLEATS! You know, those spikey shoes? SPIKEY shoes? What the Hell is going on here?! Since when do children, CHILDREN, attack other children out of violence and try to hurt them?!! This is insane. This is out of hand. This needs to STOP.

Shane is 11 years-old. Greg is 13. Jeremy was 15. This should not be happening. Little kids should not be hurting each other, +trying+ to hurt each other. Actually +wanting+ to do some damage. No way. Now, as a society, we like to point the finger. We gotta find someone to blame for these things, because it's never our own fault, no. But in this case, I'll point a finger too...at the parents.

What the hell is wrong here?!? Your kids, your sweet, innocent kids, are HURTING each other!! WAKE UP! Bullying is a MAJOR, MAJOR problem in the schools, and it's only being solved with violence. There's nothing going on to stop this!!

I say parents because they're the ones who are supposed to be raising these kids...and what do these kids do? They go out and hurt other kids. What kind of parenting is that? You say one thing that might cause this stuff: music, TV, video games, whatever...it all goes back to the parents. They have the final control over the kids, whether they know it, believe it, or not. Then, there are the kinds of parents who don't control their kids...their kids control them!! Like the ones you see so often on Maury and Montel and all that junk. PATHETIC.

I'm not a parent, and I already know so much about parenting. At least, I'd like to think so. But I mean, this stuff is obvious to me! You don't let your kids go around KICKING OTHER KIDS WITH THEIR CLEATS ON!!

I know, it's hard for some parents to keep track of their children's lives, but it's not impossible. I realize that a majority of residents in this valley work down below or elsewhere, and most of their day is taken up by the commute, but for PETE'S SAKE, it's not hard to check up on the schools and homework and the notes that are sent home with the students! Most of the parents are just too +lazy+ to do so! Yeah, I said it. They're LAZY. They're "too tired" from working all day. Well, I guess then it's not your fault at all when your son KILLS another kid with a BAT because he was teased a little bit. No, not at all.

What's with all these parents not monitoring their children? Is it because the kids say "Oh, I need my privacy!"? or is it that they're so passive and want their child to have everything so they don't crack down on the misdoings? Well, guess what...their misdoings will become their undoings. Real quick.

Bullying at school is a major problem, whether you choose to believe so or not. Take it from me, one who was bullied throughout a majority of my school-life. Just read through my "No Bull" blog and you'll see just how serious it is. Kids these days don't know how to express themselves, to defend themselves, without the use of violence! And that's a problem! They need positive role-models in their lives, and guess what! THAT'S YOU, PARENTS! Even if you are gone most of the day, you still have that time together in the evening, when you get home.

Talk to your kids, ask them about their day. Enforce it, if you have to. But you NEED to know what's going on at their school! Make it a point to call the school every week and ask if your student has caused trouble, or is slacking in class, or whatever the progress may be. Get a weekly progress report! Something! Cause, my God, this has gone way, way too far. Like Shane Jacoby's father, Joe Jacoby, said after his son was kicked in the face, how long will it take until somebody else's kid is killed?

No Bull On Bullying

All right, you're all in for it now. This subject is the one that I originally wanted to blog on this website in the first place. I have +major+ problems with bullying and all the people who allow it to happen.

Bullying is a problem.

It astounds me how so many people do not recognize this and how they do nothing to try and stop this. I must say that my views on this subject are somewhat cynical, and after reading all this, you'll understand why. You must believe me when I say that many of today's youth is under attack. Everyday someone is picked on, torn down, hurt and beat up. Everyday, many kids are made to feel that they are worthless, that they are less than a person. Thanks to bullies and thanks to all of those who see the acts but do nothing to stop it.

See, there is more than one "bad guy" here: not only is the obvious, the bully, but the others to blame are the students who see this and do nothing. The teachers who see this and do nothing. The parents who hear about it and do nothing. The other adults who see this and hear about it and do nothing. +The people who endorse bullying.+

Yes, that's right. There are MANY of you out there who think bullying is okay. You even endorse it. You promote it. You say, "Oh, but everyone goes through that." "It's a part of growing up." Well to all of you who say that.....

Is suicide a part of growing up?

Is it natural to find your child hanging in their closet?

To find them with their wrists slit open?

Is it a part of growing up when a student brings a gun to school and murders his classmates because he couldn't possibly take the humiliation anymore? Because he was pushed too far?

Guess what...no it is not. Those are the horrors of bullying. THAT IS THE REALITY. +WAKE UP.+

You turn a blind eye to the obvious acts of bullying because you don't want to get involved. Perhaps you're too busy? Perhaps the subject is too ugly, or too trivial for you to have to take time to confront. Let me ask you...is it worth it?

Is it worth your child suffering daily at the hands of some sadistic, deprived monster? Is it worth it when you can't miss the newest episode of American Idol or Lost or any other TV show instead of talking with your child and finding out their problems? Or is it up to them to raise themselves and to try and cope with the torture they go through?

Yes, I know it sounds over-dramatic, but to get the point across, exaggeration is needed in today's society. You have to shock people out of apathy. Don't get me wrong...I am not exaggerating by much. The truth is that so many people are bullied at school...and little to nothing is done about it.

"What am I supposed to do?" you ask.

The answer is simple, as it usually is.
What you must do is STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING.

If you see something going on, step in and stop it! You're an adult! Believe it or not, you have the power to disperse a could-be bullying! Tell your kids to do the same!

Believe me when I say if a bully is confronted, by someone else, they'll usually be discouraged and go away. It's your job to find out what's going on in the schools and to help STOP BULLYING.

STOP THIS NON-INVOLVEMENT STANCE OF "IT'S NORMAL" AND "EVERYONE GOES THROUGH IT."

KNOCK IT OFF AND GET INVOLVED.

The kids are suffering and you must stop this.

As a past victim of bullying myself, I know, FIRST-HAND, how it works, how it happens, and how nobody sticks their neck out to help. So please, stop the bullying.

When Is Too Much Too Much?

It's happened before, and it's happening now, and it'll no doubt happen again.

News coverage needs to learn to limit itself. I understand that a lot has happened since Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and Biloxi, and yes, there have been developments.

But let's be honest:
Who isn't tired of hearing, left and right and front and back, "Hurricane Katrina effects continue to affect..." and "Help Katrina funds by donating goods..." and "Still a state of emergency in New Orleans as authorities try to recover..."

I'm so "Hurricane Katrina'd" out. If I hear "Hurricane Katrina" again (which is all too inevitable), it'll be too soon. I understand people are suffering and people need help and aid, but please, don't make any more stories on it until there are actual, real important developments...and not before. It seems like all anyone is reporting on is the same old stuff day after day.

Though occasionally there are new things to say, but it's not more often than not. You know, I'd just be happy if nobody reported on it until New Orleans is actually recovered enough for people to go back.
Like this:
A Gulfport, Mississippi elementary school is scheduled to reopen soon. That's news! That's important! It's the first school to reopen since Hurricane Katrina hit.
Now, don't report on anything else until something like that happens again! We've heard countless times about people taking it up the rear when it comes to shelling out to get to work and back.

So, what do we do as individuals? Do we continue to pay $3.00 a gallon (let's face the truth) until we are so broke we can't spend money on anything else? Or do we stand up and *do* something?!

I say we strike.

"Oh, but, David, then we can't go to work!"
"Oh...but...inconvenience!"

Oh, boo-hoo. I guess it's not so much of an inconvenience when you can't afford gas anymore, and then you can't go to work because your car doesn't have gas.

Oh wait. Yes it is.

So what's it gonna take? Are we going to keep buying gas until it reaches $4.00 per gallon? $5.00? When are we going to say enough's enough? When do we say NO?! I remember back when gas was below $1.00 per gallon. What happened to that?

Here's my theory:
We have SO much oil under our own country's soil. Why aren't we using it? I'll tell you why. Because our government is secretly planning on using all of the rest of the world's oil first. That way, when others need oil, they'll have to come to us. That way, this country will be rich.

So how does that affect us today?
WE'RE PAYING $50 TO $70 TO FILL UP OUR DAMN GAS TANKS!

Our representatives up in Sacramento don't seem too concerned about our high gas prices. They're more concerned about getting SOLAR POWER for the AV Fairgrounds...and preventing FETAL PAIN.

So? What do we do? It's only a matter of time before we're paying $3.50 a gallon. What. Do. We. Do.
