Lancaster Mayor Dedicates Lancaster Wellness Home
By Tom Bryant
Lancaster —Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris kicked off the opening of the “Trend Wellness Home” Tuesday morning in collaboration with the Antelope Valley Partners for Heath, the Antelope Valley Community Clinic, Kaiser Permanente and the High desert Medical Group.
“This innovative joint effort is proactive in addressing our local health care needs” Mayor Parris said. “It may have as much benefit as health insurance since it is preventative and educational for our residents from birth to end of life” Mayor Parris added.
The Trend Wellness Home coordinates through “medical homes” to provide incentives to manage chronic diseases and help people take their required medications. It also provides patients with the proper education to make informed decisions regarding appropriate treatments to fit their particular lifestyle needs.
The Wellness home concept builds upon ongoing success of the Neighborhood Impact Home, a community-based center which provides safe activities for neighborhood residents. Both are supported by the Lancaster Redevelopment Agency, which has made rehabilitated homes available for both purposes.
“Co-ops such as this are imperative to the progression of our neighborhoods. By working together, community organizations provide the greatest impact for positive change,” stated Lancaster Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Director Elizabeth Brubaker.
“We are taking something we have an excess of and using innovative techniques to change the health of an entire neighborhood,” stated Mayor Parris.
Health care professionals “will be able to teach” and “we’ll be providing them with a place to do it. This thing is going to spread and engage in preventive medicine and I can’t wait to see the results in three of four years,” said Mayor Parris.
In addition to tackling the key health needs of community patients, the Trend Wellness Home will help students pursuing careers in health by providing valuable opportunities to gain hands-on experience.
“The Trend Wellness Home is an extension of the grass roots efforts needed to transcend our challenged areas into thriving neighborhoods with community resources focused on life improvement,” concluded Mayor Parris. The Mayor also stated that the Wellness Homes is “one of the most exciting things happening in America today,” and called for a “healthy people in a healthy Antelope Valley.”
“The road to wellness in the Antelope Valley starts here, we support the visionary work Rex, (Mayor Parris) is doing” said Dr. Phil Tuso. Dr. Tuso stated that the project began over a year ago and today was the result of community and city administrators working together.
The Trend Wellness Home would “have taken years to realize with the bureaucracy but his mayor made it happen in 30 to 60 days,” added Dr. Tuso. “If we had tried to make this happen without this Mayor and this council it would have taken years,” said Dr. Tuso.
Dr. Tuso said there are more Wellness Homes planned for the Antelope Valley and that the Antelope valley suffers from a “30% higher mortality rate” then the rest of Los Angeles County and the goal is to bring that number down.
The Mayor scored high marks bringing the publics health and well being out as one of his top priorities.
With crime declining and health issues finally being brought to light, there is that ever so spoken about light at the end of the tunnel.
Of Course, that’s just my opinion, I welcome yours.

That was nice of Rex to take part in this effort. I think Denise and everyone else who has been critical would agree as well, Marino.

We attended this opening and documented it. We asked the doctors that were there for their honest opinions as to the Mayor’s involvement and each one of them said that the Mayor took the lead over a year ago, cut through the red tape and made it happen.

You’ll have to excuse me. I don’t live on this blog and I lack mind reading capabilities, so I’m never aware a new blog is up until I actually visit the site.
That said, this is definitely a good thing. I know Dr. Tuso, and I know he’s really excited about this project. The fact that he supports it is enough for me.
Dr. Tuso is a force of nature, and a few years back started the AV Kidney foundation to raise money to provide kidney patients that were having trouble affording what they needed to have a stable diet with food, medication, and the protein supplements needed to get or stay healthy.
So, not only do I support this community house, I support the concept of community houses in general and look forward to seeing more of them.

Denise would be the first and only democrat to respond positively to this.

marino, that’s because Denise is a decent human being who doesn’t bash people based solely on party they belong to.

I’m sorry, what was it specifically that Rex did that I’m supposed to praise?

I see several health organizations doing something, but it seems that Rex did the dedication. Is that what you’re talking about? Did I miss part of the story?
Awesome dedication Rex! Great speech! Woo hoo!

I don’t want to disappoint, so I’ll say this. Rex Parris takes the lead on a lot of things. Other people start doing a good work, and he takes the lead.
I love it. “Cut the red tape.” “Took the lead.”
I’m sorry, I have to do it. I’m obsessed, you know.

You guys are with Rex like Democratic women were around Bill Clinton. He makes a speech and a couple of phone calls, and you have trouble keeping your clothes on.

On cue.. Harding bounces from one site to the next whining about anything Rex…
How cute..

That’s the point of my comment. Nothing. Ever. Don’t sweat it.

It sounds to me like Dr Tuso is saying this was the Mayor’s visionary work not someone elses.
Denise was less than sincere in her praise of our Mayor.
This Wellness Home is the most innovative development in health care in many years. If the democrats really did care about people they would be throwing the Mayor a party. Instead they held a demonstration in front of the mosque the same time the Wellness Home was being shown to the press.
I would tell the Mayor that success is the best revenge, but he is out of the country doing the next most innovative thing to bring real jobs to our city. If he is successful, Arnie and Denise will meet him at the airport with a lynching party.

It amazes me that even when I say something positive about something, “sincere” finds a reason to complain.
Let’s start with some facts- Dr. Tuso I know very well, and I know this plan has been in the works for some time. The health care providers put together a plan that would work for one of the community houses, presented it to the city, got the mayor on board, and it happened very fast.
I applaud that!
There is nothing insincere about saying this is a good thing, a great thing even, for our community.
Like everything, it took some great people to get it done, Dr Tuso and the folks at Kaiser, the staff at HDMG, Partners for Health, and AVCC on the medical side, City and Redevelopment agency staff, AND THE MAYOR on the city side.
There isn’t anything wrong with admitting that even Rex can get something right on occasion, we just need a mayor that will get things right all the time. Let’s make something real clear though, the “VISIONARY” part of this was accomplished by some of this valley’s finest medical minds, it was the “CUT THE RED TAPE” part that was accomplished by Rex and City staff. That doesn’t make it less a great thing, it just puts proper credit where it is due :)

………………
Let’s hear it for the little people who live in “Trend” who might have a chance. Then we hear it from the INVESTORS who’s properties might go up in value. THEN, we hear from the nay-sayers who think it’s political and no LIBERAL thinks that the ‘little people’ should have a chance in life. Hello? Or, are we now going to TRASH ACORN?

Pk, who is eligible to vote for mayor of Lancaster? Must one be a resident? Does owning property there count for anything? If I stay in a hotel there for 3 days, does that count?
( send private message )
PKShaw says...
You are eligible to vote in the city (or area) you live and are registered in. A three day hotel stay would not constitute residency. Owning property does not necessarily count, unless you live in it as your primary residence.
