Everybody In, Nobody Out
In any given year, 45 million or so working Americans go without health coverage. With the current economic crisis, that number is expected to increase. This isn’t “naysaying”, it’s reality.
As it stands, the U.S. is the only industrialised nation without a national health plan.
Aggravating this factor is the reality that U.S. taxpayers—many of whom go without healthcare, as already mentioned— are currently subsidising national health plans in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The government of Mexico is in the process of developing a universal healthcare system.
The global map below is illustrative of the healthcare scenario in individual nations.
Nobody disputes that the U.S. is in the midst of a healthcare crisis, so what can we do to remedy this issue?

mattkeltner says...
Stormy,
I don’t believe anybody should ever be without health coverage of some type.
As unpopular as it sounds, illegal aliens deserve health coverage as well.
If the corporations who hire them won’t provide benefits, then what are they to do? We cannot deny them health care. It is a basic human right.
Trust me when I tell you that there are working people—whites and blacks, Americans, born in the U.S. —who work and go without health coverage. The insurance companies have made it unaffordable to buy private insurance.
A year ago, a friend of mine died of viral meningitis in the Emergency Room of AV Hospital. He waited until the very last minute, despite complaining of headaches and ear pain for almost a month beforehand. He was 29 and a divorced father of two little girls. He had a B.A. degree in graphic arts but could only find work as a tattoo artist. Almost every single penny he made went to child support.
There are millions of people like him who work without health insurance.

Matthew, as I have stated to you numerous times in the past, it is a misnomer to say that “45 million or so working Americans go without health coverage” when you know darn good and well there are literally thousands of county hospitals, free clinics, Medi-care and a Medi-Cal type program in virtually every state. How much more are we supposed to do?
I grant you that there are people who are unfortunate enough to suffer from certain diseases and afflictions that preclude health insurance companies from offering coverage to these individuals at any price. And it is for those people the county hospital system exists.
Everyone else is just as free as I am to go buy their own health plan. You are going to counter that statement by saying they can’t afford health insurance.
To that I say life is all about choices. People choose how much they earn and how they spend the amount they earn. If their chosen profession does not allow for enough income to finance the lifestyle they’ve chosen along with health insurance then they need to either change their lifestyle or change their profession. To suggest that everyone else should alter their chosen lifestyle in order to accomodate paying for the health insurance for those who refuse to make these choices is not only unfair it is tantamount to punishing achievment and rewarding irresponsibility.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE HEALTHCARE.

As far as your friend is concerned he should not have had two children unless and until he was financially able to secure health insurance not only for himself but also for his children. Because of his irresponsibility those children are now not only without the guidance of a father but also without his financial support. What do you want to bet that now their support is borne by responsible citizens, aka taxpayers.

It is really easy to say these things when you’re blessed enough to have health insurance.
Patricia, when you say things like ”...If their chosen profession does not allow for enough income to finance the lifestyle they’ve chosen along with health insurance then they need to either change their lifestyle or change their profession” you are falsely suggesting that the job market and economy is so fluid that one can easily obtain a job that offers those sorts of benefits. It’s not that easy.
You said, ”...To suggest that everyone else should alter their chosen lifestyle in order to accomodate paying for the health insurance for those who refuse to make these choices is not only unfair it is tantamount to punishing achievment and rewarding irresponsibility.”
He was working and ”doing the best he could” Many of us are working and doing the best we can.
Remember that phrase, Patricia? :-)
I don’t understand people who reach a certain station in life and then hold disdain for everyone underneath them.
He was a very responsible guy, but like so many Americans of all generations, his marriage just wasn’t working and his wife wanted a divorce. It wasn’t entirely his fault. He did the best he could.

What about those whom hold disdain for everyone above them?
The truth is I don’t hold disdain for anyone. What I am talking about is a CONCEPT. The concept of personal responsibility. The concept that all of us have an obligation to care for ourselves and those we create.
We must resist the idea that someone else should pay for our livelihood.

Personal responsibility only goes so far, then you must accept Social responsibility.

You’re asking for suggested solutions. Here is a possible solution that a friend of mine told me about awhile back.
Split the health insurance coverage between major and minor coverage. Minor coverage, for example, would encompass procedures and care that fell below a $10,000 threshold and major would cover everything above.
Employers could furnish the major part of the plan because since it only covers catastrophic situations it would be more affordable.
The employee would then pay for the policy that covers the minor stuff which would be more affordable because of the limited amount of coverage.

Not a bad idea! Now, the question is, how do we get people behind it?

I think it’s kind of rough to say don’t have kids until your financially secure. People have jobs,Insurance, good pay and then boom they are layed off. I know somebody who had a 6 figure income and was layed off after being with the Company for 8 yrs. he could keep the Cobra at an astronomical cost but couldn’t he was layed off duh. he couldn’t get the freebies so he was screwed. I think every legal American should have ins. first then deal with the illegals. It’s clear they are not going anywhere and have become our problem.

If congress, all federal employess and the White House can have very good, tax payer funded universal health care, for all their families, why shouldn’t we all. Do you really believe we are not already paying for it and just being short changed. How can we already pay more, per capita, than the industrialized nations on this planet who have universal health care, and not have it aldready. You so-called conservatives need to find out where your money is going.

The problem with most uninsured people is that fact that they want free healthcare. They don’t want to contribute a single dime to the cost of the insurance. Not even $20. They consider $20 co-pays too expensive, etc. But ask them if they have cable t.v. and high speed internet and I’ll bet they say “yes”.
Nothing in life is free, least of all the basic necessities of life and that of course includes insurance. (But I think PK said that already).
For example, I have fantastic health insurance but no dental insurance. Do I whine about it? No, I save money so that I can afford my cleanings, exams, x-rays, etc., then take the tax deduction the feds allow me.

As an employer, I should have choice in the wages I pay, and the benefits offered. I should not have to withhold taxes, because I’m not a CPA, but have to become one just to fix cars.
Let’s say I have to garnish an employee’s wages. I get a demand letter on official letter head that threatens me to withhold something the employee pissed off.
I didn’t do anything wrong but I’m forced to comply. The state should contract with me and give me a percentage of sales taxes collected, and also pay me to withhold an employee’s tax if the employee requests I be their bank and I collect money for doing the job. I’m in business to make money not to make the state money. That’s called robbery.
You want health care to be reformed, do away with insurance. Third-party pay is why it costs so much.
Yah, you guys tell MK that 40 million thing shows a bias without any real facts to back it up. Also MK it is nice of you to be compassionate with other people’s money.

Here’s a thought. The Democrats vilify Big Business, then demand BB provide benefits, play banker, take care of the kids, provide training, control amount of wages, worry about health care, then elect people that put the brakes on business. They haul BB in from of congress and harangue them for daring to make a profit.
The thought is why not allow business choices and all of the above, let the employee become responsible and see what happens.
Socan you think your boss could trust you to pay your taxes if your boss wasn’t required too? If you can be trusted why let your boss have free use of your money till he pays his tax deposit?

Some people make a CHOICE that they can not afford insurance. My husband is a builder and self employed. I looked for a job that would provide my family with insurance. I know a few that have nice homes, nice cars and toys, but fall into the “un-insured American”. For them, it’s a choice. Boat…health insurance…they choose boat. There are a lot of “thems” out there. I am tired of footing the bill for them. There is NO such thing as free health care, it will come out of the pockets of the small businesses like always. Big corporations will be taxed higher, they will pass it down to the consumer and small business like my families will suffer because there is less disposable income. It’s so simple, yet so blinding because people want something for free. NOTHING IS FREE!!!!

Randy, my father worked hard all his life and imparted some of his wisdom on me:
1. Pay yourself first. 10% of your gross goes to savings.
2. Don’t ever borrow against your house.
3. Pay your credit cards off every month.
4. Never screw with the feds.

Jody, I understand your concern. Socan can be a bunch of conflicting ideas.
Socan’s dad taught her to pay yourself first. When in business you are the last one to be paid. I goes like this, taxes, sale taxes, withholding taxes, work comp taxes, then your employees, then your suppliers, and if there is anything left you get a paycheck.
Of course you can skim off the top but I don’t think socan is admitting her father did that.

Jody: Common sense is not an exclusive Republican trait. I run my life they way I was taught. I don’t take advantage, I don’t inconvenience, and I try never to keep anyone waiting. I care what happens to people and I’m sympathetic to those less fortunate to a degree. But I also realize there is just never enough money to keep the poor from having babies, committing crimes, and failing to be financially independent. If the Government doesn’t stay involved, what’s the alternative? Don’t say churches because that won’t ever happen.
I’ve posted many blogs about many politicians, both republican and democrat whose behavior was appalling.
I can give you many reasons why I vote democratic, but it really doesn’t matter because I will cross party lines and I don’t blindly vote for anything or anyone based solely on which party they belong to.

In 1990, Romney was asked to return to Bain & Company, which was facing financial collapse. As CEO, Romney managed an effort to restructure the firm’s employee stock-ownership plan, real-estate deals and bank loans, while increasing fiscal transparency. He also worked to ensure the safety of the Games following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 by coordinating a $300 million security budget. Despite the initial fiscal shortfall, the Games ended up clearing a profit of $100 million, not counting the $224.5 million in security costs contributed by outside sources.
Romney contributed $1 million to the Olympics, and donated the $825,000 salary he earned as President and CEO to charity. He wrote a book about his experience titled Turnaround: Crisis, Leadership, and the Olympic Games

EMTALA, enacted by the federal government in 1986, requires that hospital emergency departments treat emergency conditions of all patients regardless of their ability to pay and is considered a critical element in the “safety net” for the uninsured. However, the federal law established no direct payment mechanism for such care. Indirect payments and reimbursements through federal and state government programs have never fully compensated public and private hospitals for the full cost of care mandated by EMTALA. In fact, more than half of all emergency care in the U.S. now goes uncompensated

Obama: Healthcare for Illegals
Monday, July 21, 2008 9:06 PM
By: Dick Morris & Eileen McGann Article Font Size
Democrats’ single most important domestic proposal — universal health insurance — may blow up in Barack Obama’s face when voters are exposed to the deadly details.
Obama has said, proudly and often, “I am going to give health insurance to 47 million Americans who are now without coverage.” But are they “Americans?”

I think we would be hard pressed to find anyone who couldn’t pay the $65.00 to go to an urgent care facility. But then again, they don’t want to spend their own money on their own healthcare. Why pay it out of their own pocket when clearly they can get it for free?
( send private message )
socanative says...
Here’s AVHMC’s definition of emergency:
Is it an Emergency?
The initial minutes after an injury or medical crisis are often the most critical. Trust your instincts when deciding if you or a loved one needs immediate medical attention. Symptoms that generally indicate an emergency include:
Uncontrollable bleeding
Head injury or broken bones
Poisoning or suspected overdose
Inability to breathe or shortness of breath
Seizure or loss of consciousness
Persistent chest or abdominal pain or pressure
Numbness or paralysis of an arm or leg
Sudden slurred speech, visual changes or weakness
Major burns
Intense pain
Severe reaction to an insect bite, medication or food
What is so hard to understand? If its not life or death take your ass to the Urgent Care Facility. Please not that “fever” does not appear on the list. This should eliminate most reasons why kids are seen in the ER.

When he gets sick he heads over to County-USC. He gives them a fake name, says he’s homeles and has no ID. Then he doesn’t have to pay the doctor’s bill.

The dentist next door also has parents asking her to accept payments for their kids’ dental care. Meanwhile they are wearing $15,000 to $25,000 Rolex and Carier watches.

I don’t understand why everyone is so hot under the collar about what the poor take from us with a feeling of entitlement.
The Savings and Loan scandale, Enron and Worlcom bankrupted more middle class Americans than worrying about the foodstamps passed out the poor.
The war in Iraq cost about what $10 billion a month. Who do you think will pay for that? The middle class of course.
Crime and poverty is big business in America. Prisons tops the list as one of the most lucrative business enterprises. How about all the middle class folk who have jobs in welfare offices, etc. caring for the poor. Take poverty away and a lot of people would be out of work.
Don’t even let me get started with how much that Manson murderess cult member has cost us for her health care—the one suppose to die in three months from a brain tumor. Last count I heard was $2 million since March. What doctors sucked up that gravy?
As I say, crack on the poor all you wish but they employ a lot of folks—from the jails to the social services lines. Where would be employ all these fools who lost their jobs if poverty was eradicated or we just let the poor go without a handout?
I so hate it when the poverty pimps—those who benefit from the poor and the criminal element—complain as they go home to their middle class houses with backyard pools and yearly vacations.

By the way SoCan, I know plenty of people who screw with the feds. Now and then they pull someone in and make a big deal out of them like Wesley Snipes but most of the time—they play cat and mouse.
When it comes to the average citizen, the feds try to crush them. Money has its priviledges.
Just like the Ramseys whether they are guilty of their their daughter’s murder or not. How many of us would have gotten away with not showing up to police interviews or thumbing our noses at the cops. Money my girl—they had money and money protected them.
Your father was only partially right. he forgot the most important lesson of all.
1. Make sure you are in a financial position to take my advice. Can’t pay yourself if it’s between you and the light bill.

Sorry Matt, but I do dispute the crisis title.
15 million are illegal aliens make up a sizable portion of the 40 million. Another 15 million are children who are covered by free health care that are not uing it and the rest are people in various stages between health care plans.
My father who passed on 4 years ago lived in Yakima, WA. Memorial Hospital in Yakima has expanded over the years and now over half of its beds are utilized by Canadians fleeing the Canadian health care paradise.
Europeans, Asians, Middle Easterners come here by the tens of thousands to get health care.
The only crisis is in the emergency cae centers due to illegal aliens flooding them for regular dotor visits because they don’t have to pay. Imagine how many will come hereif we give full service to them?
Best wishes,
Stormy
