Just do the right thing and support mom and pop. I do and will continue to do so. I DON’T NEED WALMART ! or TARGET ! and even if they are next door to me I would shop elsewhere. All my shopping goes to Palmdale and will continue that way. I will never forget RX PARRIS a personal injury Atty. saying " I don’t feel enough pain for those PEOPLE in Quartz Hill" My tax dollars will never go to Lancaster until he fixes his lack of sensitivity to a community and especially children his plan stands to injure.

The problem is the Target parcel was zoned commercial forever. The challenge should have been the General Plan Amendment and Zone Change to accomodate commissioner Vose’s deal for the Walmart parcel. A referendum could have been filed to put it to a vote like Palmdale did a few years ago. Difference was their council put it out to the referendum, ours won’t and nobody cares enough to gather the signatures to get it on the ballot!

Larry, you should also point out that the people in Palmdale actually wanted the Walmart on the East Side. The only reason it was FORCED to a ballot was because a grocery workers union was trying to protect jobs. It had nothing to do with zoninig.

The zoning was changed on the East side at S when Kaiser came along. I know because i was part of the group that mobilized the council to change the zoning so that Kaiser could build over there.

The referendum was whether to uphold or overturn the zone change. But you’re right. The real underlying issue was the opposition of the grocers union.

Although the zoning did need to be changed for a few acres to enlarge the proposed Walmart plaza at S and 47th, this was not the reason the development went to ballot. The union used the zoning request to try to shut down the whole project because Walmart is non- union. They turned in signatures that weren’t even attached to the ballot initiative as required by law. A synpathetic judge forced the City to take the paperwork. The people voted for the Walmart. The whole thing was a huge waste of taxpayers money.

Right, the voters of Palmdale were hosed by the city by first saying that the WalMart on S-47th would not be a Super WalMart, and voters voted it in. Then the city ‘gave’ WalMart the xtra land so they could expand.

I knew it was going to be a SuperWalmart. Why do you think there was a perfectly groomed piece of land next to the building when it was built. Those union idiots were going around lying to the public, telling people that there was 1 million square feet of empty retail space in Palmdale…REALLY? I said show me where the numbers came from. Of course they couldn’t. They were lying for their union bosses who came from across the country to fight a union battle in Palmdale. Next time we should tell them to just GO HOME!

I can’t speak for Palmdale but I think we have enough Walmarts and the “slipper people” that comes with them!

I completely agree…we have more than enough Walmarts. I had great hopes for Palmdale when I bought in 1992. The City has done very little to attract wealthier residents. Food 4 LESS, Arco, and subsidized housing have not helped. At least we have a lawn ordinance ;)

No, rp, it was a city council initiated referendum. There were petitions turned in at the time, but they were for and against the project. And was originally planned as a Super Walmart from the beginning. It was designed and built to expand.

palmdale voter,
the question is did anybody really care about those four acres? The project was already zoned for a commercial shopping center. I resent people coming from out of town to meddle in Palmdale politics. The people were used as pawns.

The residents around the area of 47th E and Avenue S were very happy to get the Wal-Mart because there was nothing else close by. And now because of the Wal-Mart other stores and businesses have moved in making life a lot more convenient for those living there. Had there already been plenty of shopping they might not have been so happy to have Wal-Mart.

intheknow has done it again. you know nothing. you say you are blind yet you know you are not. the high school will not be the same. since other schools have declined qh needs to follow. it has worked its way from littlerock, way on the east side and has now found the way west side. intheknow will only sit behind the computer and cause problems. try getting involved in qh. i wish i could. if it wasn’t for the sales person telling me all about the joys of living within qh, i would be out there. being surrounded by qh hill and living at, near or around makes it hard to qualify.
