Today's paper
Anyone still taking the paper, a question.

What was the full story that appeared in today’s paper?

“A Palmdale man was fatally injured Wednesday morning when he apparently jumped in front of a city truck turning onto Rancho Vista Boulevard (Avenue P) near Marie Kerr Park, sheriff’s officials said.”

Sad story but again I don’t take the paper anymore and won’t after the stupidity of cutting off internet access.

So what’s the story?

How many witnesses saw him jump in front of the truck? Or did the city truck just hit him and the paper iS tainting the jury pool fir the wrongful death suit.

Realsteve I quit the paper this year too. And I feel good like I knew that I would. When I need some dogma and rightwibg propaganda, and when I need to be reminded how ignorant and clisedminded people can be, I just come on the blog.

Man Jumps in front of truck
Driver swerved, rolled over apparent suicide
By Daisy Ratzlaff
Valley Press Staff Writer
PALMDALE — A Palmdale man was fatally injured Wednesday morning when he apparently jumped in front of a city truck turning onto Rancho Vista Boulevard (Avenue P) near Marie Kerr Park, sheriff’s officials said.

The man, described as a veteran in his late 50s who lives at a nearby care home and was taking psychiatric medication, walked out into the stree, made eye contact with the driver of a city truck hauling a riding lawn mower, then threw himself onto the pavement in front of the truck, deputies and witnesses said. The driver swerved, but the truck rolled over the man, deputies said.

“I saw the truck stop and swerve, and then I saw the man lying in the street”, said a motorist who had stopped on Rancho Vista, waiting for a traffic signal. "I think he was trying to cross the street, but it could also be that he did it on purpos. He was defi-

nitely an older man."

The man’s name was not immediately released. Firefighter paramedics performed CPR on him before transporting him in an ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital, but he was later pronounced dead, sheriff’s officials said.

Senior Deputy Paul Nevarez of Palmdale’s Traffic Detail said the man had just crossed the street from Marie Kerr Park using a nearby crosswalk. Then he walked a few feet along the sidewalk before stepping back into the street.

“He stepped off the sidewalk and looked right at the driver before doing a ‘Superman leap,’” Nevarez said. “Several witnesses saw what happened. It was intentional and a suicide.”

The man jumped about nine feet into the roadway, officials said.

Earlier in the morning, the man told personnel at the cre home that he was going for a walk to a book store, Nevarez added.

Several minutes after the incident, at least four patrol units lined the roadway of Rancho Vista and blocked oncoming traffic from driving into the scene.

Two fire engines also responded.

Close to a dozen deputies, more than half of them traffic investigators, walked up and down the roadway, taking statements from witnesses. They also took notes on clipboards after using a measuring wheel to record the distance from the sidewalk to the street.

Very sad. I wonder what drugs he was on….or what? They say he was a veteran in his late 50’s. I’m afraid we’re going to see more of this, like we saw after Viet Nam.

I saw the story too. And I don’t take the paper either. The quality of their reporting is crap. Even when they get the facts right it’s so badly written that you can’t make sense of it. It’s a shame that newspapers are dying, but for the Valley Press it can’t happen too soon.

I don’t understand why the Antelope Valley Press gets any awards, I agree that the paper has little journalistic quality. I do read “Opinions” because the readers are usually more interesting in what they have to say than the “journalists.”

The description from Deputy Nevarez , published in the paper as fact is hearsay. Neverez recited the incident information he got from witnesses as the police were called after the fact. If I was a family member of this person who was killed, I’d be outraged – especially when the Sheriff states: " “Several witnesses saw what happened. It was intentional and a suicide.”

They’re most likely are members of a society or league of small-town suburban newspapers, determined by population and circulation-hence, a lot of awards.

Yes, the writing sucks. Especially the biased coverage of city council meetings, etc. It’s quite obvious who pays the most for advertising – most of the paper reads like a Public Relations sheet.

As an example of a bigger paper that failed to “get it”, here’s an article and video on how the Rocky Mountain News out in Denver failed.

“Post Mortem For A Dead Newspaper
from the looking-backwards,-not-looking-forward dept

John Temple, the former editor, president and publisher of the now shuttered Rocky Mountain News, has been running a great blog about issues from the newspaper industry over the past few months."

Sounds familiar…like our own local fish wrap.

The problem with the A.V. Press is not necessarily the quality of the writing but it needs a new look, a more objective slant, beefed up writing and some columns that make a more educated, politically savvy group THINK. It needs to STIMULATE, not just be a place where mom and pop can go to get news on themselves. IT’S NO LONGER A SMALL TOWN PAPER AND SHOULDN’T BE TREATED LIKE ONE. Copies should be flying off the stands, everyone should have a subscription, and the paper shouldn’t be afraid to write the truth even if people like Mr. Mayor of Lancaster gets frustrated and pulls his adds.

I think Dennis Anderson, who is a great writer, should call me and let’s sit down and revamp the paper before it dies on the vine or becomes bird cage liner. They’ve got a good team — but everyone is just COMPLACENT.

HEYSELL ME THE PAPER. I BET WE DOUBLE PAID CIRCULATION IN SIX MONTHS!!!

The biggest problem with the paper right now is that they make zero effort to appeal to half the population of the AV. It is still very much a small town, politically lopsided and easily influenced paper. Even with the “small town” feel, a lot of people still complain that a lot of local news does not get covered.

Its also a type of “small town” paper that is just a bit out of touch with the time. The Coachella Valley has a much similar population, but their paper has “grown up” to reflect the age, and their electronic version of the news is exceptional (and a money maker). http://www.mydesert.com/

That is what we should be moving towards.

The Valley Press also needs to be more investigative. It needs to be like the Las Vegas Review-Journal and go after corrupt people, unabashed, while maintaining a popular appeal.

It can continue to pen right-leaning editorials, nothing wrong with that, but it needs to hire journalists who know who to write in a level higher than fifth grade.

Seriously, a “big” word here and there never killed anyone!

Sometimes when I read the articles written by local journalists, I feel my I.Q. level drop several points.

The circulation has dwindled but then so has the circulation of many newspapers. Let’s face it; some things the valley press can fix, others it cannot. Times are changing.

For one, charging people to read the Valley Press on the Internet was the stupidest thing they could have done!

Even the LA Times, NY Times and WaPo, for all of their flaws, do not do that!

The Valley Press could generate so much revenue through online ads, if it kept it’s Internet version available.

Whatever, though. Let them learn their own lessons.

Other papers do that too Matt. I guess when you’re getting close to not being able to pay salaries, you try anything. Can’t fault the owner for trying everything except makes sense — revamp the paper. Let Dennis Anderson turn out a paper that makes people hunger to buy it. Get rid of old Vern Lawson — no offense.

That is funny that you guys are blogging about the internet access being cut off. I just got off the phone with an editor at the AV press telling him how stupid that was. I spend a lot of my time in the LA area and catch up on the news through the web. Now I am faced with a message that “If I wasn’t too cheap to spend .25 for a paper I could be reading the story.” Guess What? I do subscribe! Why don’t they at least give us a pin.

As for the quality of the paper compared to my experience with the Daily News, the AV Rag is wonderful! I had the Daily News interview one time about how we built street lighting in the Valley. They threw out 90% of the facts and put the story in the paper with a picture of a bunch of Acorn people marching for latino rights. They were holding a sign that said 70% of Valley latinos supported Valley Succesion. Basically, the story was spun into a story of descrimination to alientate the valley people from downtown. Those that follow blindly deserve exactly what they get!

The AV press like many newspapers only print what they want printed and if they can’t find facts to fit the story is doesn’t get printed. News can be slanted don’t trust none of them. Most are liberal orientated and owned like the NY Times or the LA Times for that matter.
