Hero business owner kills robber
Should we celebrate a bad guy was blown away by a person protecting their property rights?

If yes why?

If not should the owner be tried for homicide?

“There was a confrontation between the store owner and the suspects. The store owner was armed and fired a handgun at them, striking at least one of them,” Anderson said.

The suspect, identified as Robert Summers, 28, of Lancaster, died Wednesday afternoon at Antelope Valley Hospital. Summers was shot inside the store but managed to get outside, where fire officials found him collapsed on a sidewalk in a commercial-industrial complex in the 200 block of East Avenue K-8.

The second intruder also may have been wounded, but was able to flee and had not been found by Wednesday evening, deputies said.

We shouldn’t celebrate the fact that somebody has been killed. BUT…they took the risk of thieving, so they got what they bargained for. There should be an investigation, and as long as they werent just stealing something unarmed, and unconfrontational, then he had ALL THE RIGHT to defend himself and his property. If they were armed and/or aggressively confronted him in any way, he has every right, and should be properly defended against any wrong doing. If, on the other hand, it was somebody, for example, inside a store, and then just grabbed something and ran without any physical threat to the owner, and the owner shot him as he was fleeing, then that would just be cowardly, and he should be charged with manslaughter.

Very true genesis…sadly, this owner’s legal battles will be miniscule (spell check) compared to his own conscience and future nightmares he will have regardless if he KNOWS he was in the right. After taking a life, one cannot go a day without thinking of it for the rest of his life.

This is not the first time the Stephenses have been confronted by an intruder. Rob Stephens in August 2003 shot and killed a burglar who broke into the comic book shop when it was near 15th Street West and Avenue J. Stephens told investigators he had been sleeping in the back room because of other recent burglaries.

The man had a right to spend the night in his business. Thus the intruder entered, he rightfully feared for his life. The shooting was justified.

I don’t think anyone would consider someone protecting their home or place of business a crime, especially if someone was physically threatened. Where things sometimes get a little “hinky” is where someone shoots a guy trying to escape. I’m sure even Rex Parris would take that case.

Should we celebrate because someone was shot and killed? I’m not quite ready to go there. It’s kind of like celebrating a successful amputation. Sure it was necessary, sure we’re glad that it was successful, but nevertheless a limb was lost.

Lancaster — Unsuspecting burglars were surprised early Wednesday morning after breaking into the Base Card and Comic Shop in the 200 block of East Avenue K-8.

The owner, who was staying in the store due to recent burglaries in the shop, was armed, according to Los Angeles County Homicide Sgt. Gib Anderson.

One suspect was shot in the head during the 3:30 a.m. burglary and was in grave condition at Antelope Valley Hospital early Wednesday morning. A second suspect fled, Anderson said.

“The store owner was inside and confronted at least two people inside the store. The owner fired in the air to scare the burglars. One suspect was found outside the business and taken to the hospital and is in very serious condition,” Anderson said.

The suspect had a gunshot wound to his head.

During an early morning briefing, Anderson said there was no more information as to the age or names of the suspects or whether the second suspect was injured.

A large hole could be seen in a front window of the shop and the window blinds were damaged.

Yellow crime tape surrounded the area and two bags of evidence were sitting on the hood of a sheriff’s patrol car.

Whatever the “real” facts of this shooting, it all came out well. When the second (suspect) is found, a murder charge will be levied against him. And everybody says hard to find good news!
