Boxer you're next!
In epic upset, GOP’s Brown wins Mass. Senate race
BOSTON – In an epic upset in liberal Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown rode a wave of voter anger to win the U.S. Senate seat held by the late Edward M. Kennedy for nearly half a century, leaving President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul in doubt and marring the end of his first year in office.
Addressing an exuberant victory celebration Tuesday night, Brown declared he was “ready to go to Washington without delay” as the crowd chanted, “Seat him now.” Democrats indicated they would, deflating a budding controversy over whether they would try to block Brown long enough to complete congressional passage of the health care plan he has promised to oppose.
“The people of Massachusetts have spoken. We welcome Scott Brown to the Senate and will move to seat him as soon as the proper paperwork has been received,” said Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin said he would notify the Senate on Wednesday that Brown had been elected.
This is a big shot in the gut for the dems. Next November it will be even bigger!

“The best thing that could happen to Barack Obama is more Democratic losses in hodgepodge elections that might yank away our young transfixed Narcissus from his mesmerizing reflecting pool.
Almost immediately after Obama showed his ideological cards last spring, I suggested in the first weeks of his presidency that the bait-and-switch president would soon face a Carter/Clinton moment in which he could either press on with his polarizing ideology, damage his party for a generation, and eventually end up churlish and sneering at the electorate, who did not appreciate his exalted morality and genius — or triangulate and follow the Dick Morris/Bill Clinton model of talking and acting sort of centrist.
Who knows after Obama’s Scott Brown moment? We now may hear once again the old “no more Red State/Blue State” tropes, the stale campaign promises of presidential vetoes, claims of financial sobriety, the return of a “war on terror,” and smaller government
We’re either down to all that — or Obama’s more principled road to perdition."

The problem is Obama is a mill stone around the dems neck. Obama is to vain to know it and someone needs him to move on.
Expect a war, or an attempt on his life. That is the only thing left to salvage his failing presidency.

I have followed the career of Boxer since she started in Congress.
I agree it is time for Boxer to go because like all things big and small, there should be an expiration date on the package. Boxer has clearly run out of ideas, has no vision about where to take California, and is tired. We need a fresh vision, someone with spunk and drive, and someone who will stir the passions of all voters to want to clean up California.
Boxer is too tied to the status quo. I know it, you know it and I’m betting Boxer knows it too.
By the way, isn’t Boxer related to the Clinton dynasty via marriage? I can just imagine everyone sitting around the dinner table at a holiday advising Boxer when and if it’s her time to hit the road.
Boxer has enough experience to go off and lecture, do keynote addresses, write a book….. But as far as serving the people, that day has come and gone. I am in agreement with the rest of you on this issue.
Know when to stay and know when to go. Barb’s effectiveness has run its course.

I don’t mean to be a kill-joy Randy, but what does a person’s transportation preference have to do with their character?
On the other hand, it is very earth-shattering that Massachusetts — of all places! — elected a Republican to the Senate. I guess it goes to show that people are, indeed, extremely unhappy with the Obama administration.
I wouldn’t bank on the same thing happening in California, however.
Californians, especially Southern Californians, are less educated and less civic-minded than people in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts, since the time of the Puritans, has been the literacy and education capitol of the U.S. They are mainly liberal Democrats, but they sense that something is “off”.
I don’t think Southern Californians have that intrinsic sensibility, but we’ll see…

Nah Matt – I think the election of a Republican means nothing.

Matt – I think that people on the East Coast period are better educated, more civic minded and “get it” far above those that are educated on the West Coast.
I feel people on the East Coast have a greater sense of urgency, like to get things done, and even walk faster than people on the West Coast.
I think I’ll look up some studies on that phenomenon.

Diana,
I respectfully beg to differ…The election of a Republican in Massachusetts is almost unprecedented in the state’s modern history.
It says something about the mood of the Massachusetts electorate.

mattkeltner says...
Yes, it is a “great thing” for sure, that the title of GOP didn’t seem to bother the voting populace of a state that is the most liberal in the U.S.
Massachusetts liberals are their own breed of people, I think. They’re often very objective and very skeptical of the people in office. Part of the Puritan ethic remains there, which is the idea that “good government” is better than a corrupt government. I think the people saw Coakley as having been too tied in with the Democrats in the state legislature and just another “me too” vote in what has become an increasingly corrupt Obama Administration.

mattkeltner says...
Steve,
Since the question of marriage is a state matter, I don’t think Brown would make a declaration on it, unless it became a federal matter again. I imagine that, if pressed, he would probably take the same approach as Mitt Romney, which was that it was a “state’s rights” matter that should be resolved at the individual state level. New England Republicans, in those rare moments when they’re elected, often resemble the Old Paleoconservative wing of the party that supported fiscal restraint, global isolationism, but were fairly libertarian or moderate on social issues.

Actually the conserative message won the day. If you can communicate the message and it is less not more intrusion then you can win. This is why liberals lie. When they tell the truth about killing the unborn and raising taxes or bannin trans fats, people rebel.

I respectfully disagree. The teabag movement is made up of people from all over the political spectrum. Democrats and DTS voters pay the same amount of tax as everyone else and they are fed up with it. Between, income, property, sales, utility, and use taxes such as fishing, hunting, and hiking ‘passes’ we are being taxed way beyond anything fair.
These people are patriots for standing up and saying enough is finally way too much.

The financial collapse should forever silence the mindless “government is bad, regulation is bad, trust the market only” chanters. Who are largely responsible for the mess.
PKShaw -
The movement is made up of angry white Fox News watchers. Who never said a peep when Bush was spending us into oblivion—Bush never even TRIED to pay as he went, with anything he did. At least Obama, with his one big initiative (health care), is trying. The teabag d-bags didn’t even exist then. The only thing that’s changed—and has activated this bunch—is that they don’t agree with Obama and Dems.
In short, teabaggers don’t like taxes or spending…by DEMOCRATS. Period.
It’s a faux movement anyway. Bought and paid for by Fox News. And whether we agree or not on the teabag d-bag’s makeup or backing, they are going to create a problem for the Republican party.

I have no idea as to the derivation of Randy’s “Angry white voters! The voters had a temper tantrum!” (I suspect that Randy quoted another blogger.)
Nonetheless, yes, a majority of Massachusetts’ white, traditionally and so-called politically progressive voters have been been angered over so much as the illusion of healthcare reform – over the mere thought of their having to share their healthcare provider’s waiting rooms with (a shudder) poor people, most especially those of color.
Daniel Dd Leon once wrote “Scratch a reformer [a liberal], and you’lll find a reactionary [a right-winger or so-called conservative].” And it was not a spontaneous or prejudicial remark. It was the result of, not only close observation, but also of a painstaking analysis of the liberal’s premises and postures. One of those premises is, of course, the preservation and perpetuation of the capitalist system of economic exploitation, albeit “reformed” so as to modify or alleviate capitalism’s worst effects. But when it comes to the possibility of actually having to “rub elbows” with those most affected by the highly antisocial capitalist system, the average white liberal will indeed throw a temper tantrum.
(Note: Yes, I am well aware of the failings of Massachusetts’ “healthcare” system.)

AVSky – I suppose they are by and large Fox viewers since hardly anyone is watching the other news stations. Fox news has more viewers than all of the other stations combined. And now with the addition of Gov. Palin the numbers will be even higher. (Dennis Miller on O’Reilly is a hoot!)
As far as the White part goes, it is apparent you haven’t been to many “tea parties” or you would have witnessed not only a cross section of political ideologues but the wide variety of racial/ethnic representatives as well. Taxing structures are not categorized by race.
This brings up a very enlightening hour that Glenn Beck had on recently. He spent some time in a room of about 75-100 people in which his was the only White face. The people who participated left me with a sense of hope I haven’t felt in a long time. I hope the show runs again because people like you need to see it. Free markets, free enterprise, manufacturing, job creation. That’s how we’re gonna do it, not by enlarging government.”
The next morning he took the 7 a.m. shuttle from Boston to Washington for his first trip to the Capitol. On the plane, after they took off, the pilot came on and said, “Senator Brown is on board, on his way to Washington.” The plane erupted in applause."

Obama will have to get used to boos. Too bad so sad. How’s that hope and change going for ya?
Wonder why I knew this guy was a jackass liar and he fooled so many?

politics is a one-way street with liberals, they will never criticize their party for things that go wrong. no, they just pass the blame to others. notice that reps. are more open to that?

You’d think they want the country to fail. It’s why Rush Limbaugh said he hopes Obama fails. Looks like the voters of Mass think so too.

I thought this was interesting, read what Obama said about the Ma. elections (the article is from Beck’s website)
Here’s how President Obama summed up Tuesday’s massive political earthquake in Massachusetts:
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: People are angry and they’re frustrated. Not just because of what’s happened in the last year or two years, but what’s happened over the last eight years.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
Believe it or not: It’s still Bush’s fault. He actually started out his interview with George Stephanopoulos by blaming the voter anger in Massachusetts on George W. Bush. So, help me with that, Barack: The people are mad at Bush for what he did eight years ago, so they voted for a Republican?
Take that, George Bush! We’ll help out Obama… by voting for a Republican! That’ll show him and that evil Karl Rove, too!
That’s like getting mad at oil companies because of high gas prices and switching from Exxon to Shell. I hate these big oil people, so I’m going to switch to Chevron!
Stop insulting our intelligence.

Thank you for the post, whomeye. I really like your analogy to Exxon and Shell. It makes perfect sense out of something said by the president that made very little sense.

I wish that I could take credit for those fine words, but it was Glenn Beck who said it…

Why do righties always talk about Dems " never" holding the office of Pres again? During the dark years of Bush, Rove et al talked about the new “permanent Republican majority”. That’s nuts! Parties win and lose….its a cycle.
Even the fanatics in 1930s Germany’s had the good sense to limit their nutty outlook to a mere “1000 year” Reich. But the US Right…oh no, its permanent! (Interesting trivia…the Nazi heyday lasted from 38-44, 6 years. Bush’s “permanent” Rep majority lasted from 2001-2007, 6 years).
And already Randy is talking about Dems “never” achieving the presidency again? Who thinks like that? Sanely I mean?

“And already Randy is talking about Dens “never” achieving the presidency again?” Where exactly did I say this? I even in this blog said Hillary 2012! Are you making things up again?

I could say the more dems tell the truth the more likly they are to not get elected. I did imply that in this blog.
Where’s your anger at Obama for lying to you?

Scroll up. You said it….the longer Obama’s is in office the more likely it is Dems will never be elected again.
Such language is all over the rights mindset. Even in America’s darkest days, suffering under the miserable failure Bush, and knowing the Reps would be trounced for it, I’d never think that the Rep party was dead forever. But such language is common for the right. Its some kind of absolutist, black-and-white way of thinking, or something. I don’t know because I don’t think that way.

Saying this “And already Randy is talking about Dems “never” achieving the presidency again” is a big difference than this: the longer Obama’s is in office the more likely it is Dems will never be elected again.
In case you missed it Obama is now the other John Edwards of the Democratic Party. The longer he hangs on the as I said the less likely dems will get elected. They will have to run on being more republican like. You know cutting taxes, reducing deficits. Oops that how Obama got elected when he was lying to you.
I totally understand why you think abortion is good, taxes can’t be high enough for the productive, and Obama walks on water.

“Even in America’s darkest days, suffering under the miserable failure Bush.” So our economy this last year is so much better now, has improved dramatically it is no wonder you question sanity. Of course sanity is a black and white issue.
Being a little bit insane is like being a little bit pregnant right?
You are quick to label a person as insane but say you don’t think that way. You have no guide post you can relate one issue to another because that would be black and white. So why do you have any strong opinions such as Bush was a failure?
You just said you don’t think in absolutes but you seem to absolutely do think in absolutes. No wonder your leader’s ratings are dropping faster that camel crap in Egypt.

Good question whomeye. That person absolutely believes there are no absolutes? To hold that thought in your head proves dense thinking.
Remember digital? He said absolutely there is no god. After we looked over the nine philosophies of reality he was smart enough to finally concede the possibility of a god.

No, the Bush Failed Economy hasn’t turned around yet. At least the freefall is stopped. And its hard to imagine our economy getting back to the Clinton’s Miracle Economy heady days.
Obama’s hasn’t proven himself up to it yet, but at least most of the foxes are out of the henhouse.

“Bush Failed Economy” is a pretty harsh absolute. Didn’t you just say, “Its some kind of absolutist, black-and-white way of thinking, or something. I don’t know because I don’t think that way.”
So why are you so judgmental?

I disagree, Obama has proved himself totally incompetent! Must be why when he did Harvard Law Review nothing can be found that he did.
