LWVAV Kicks Off!
August 26, 1920 is a very special day in our nation’s history as it was on this day that women officially became voters. We are celebrating the 90th anniversary of this historic day by announcing the formation of the League of Women Voters Antelope Valley.
Not coincidentally, the League of Women Voters, founded by Carrie Chapman Catt, is also celebrating 90 years of a “mighty political experiment” designed to help 20 million women carry out their new responsibilities as voters. It encouraged them to use their new power to participate in shaping public policy. From the beginning, the League was an activist, grassroots organization whose leaders believed that citizens should play a critical role in advocacy. It was then, and is now, a nonpartisan organization. League founders believed that maintaining a nonpartisan stance would protect the fledgling organization from becoming mired in the party politics of the day. However, League members were encouraged to be political themselves, by educating citizens about, and lobbying for, government and social reform legislation.
Since its inception the League has grown to include millions of members, both men as well as women. The goal of increasing voter participation and education has not changed.
The inaugural event for LWVAV will be held at the Palmdale Hotel, located at 300 W. Palmdale Blvd. at 11:30 am on August 26th. It is a “topic luncheon” wherein attendees will participate in conversations on a variety of politically relevant subjects. Each table is assigned a moderator whose task will be to keep the conversation flowing.
