League of Women Voters AV
Not so long ago we all marveled by the news scenes showing Afghanis waiting in very long lines to vote and proudly displaying their purple thumbs after they had done so. A very stark contrast exists when we can walk right up to the table in our polling places; no waiting necessary.
Here in the Antelope Valley we have a shockingly dismal voter turnout rate of only about 12-14% of registered voters, not necessarily of all who are eligible. When one thinks about the number of men and women who have given their lives for the system of government we enjoy, not to mention the pioneers who endured so much to settle and civilize our great country, it is unbelievable that so many don’t value those sacrifices so much as to even vote regularly.
Possibly an even bigger problem is that voters are deciding laws that affect us all without really understanding the repercussions of these votes. They don’t understand that mandating money be spent in one way takes funding from something else or that social program that sounds good is already being covered by another one. A few years ago people voted to limit the amount developers have to pay for infrastructure necessities like schools and parks. Did voters realize what they were doing?
It is for this reason that we need a local League of Women Voters here in the AV. For the past 90 years the League’s army of volunteers has worked on not only increasing voter participation but also a greater understanding of pending legislation. The League has remained steadfast in being a non-partisan organization that neither supports nor opposes candidates or parties.
If you are interested in helping with this effort, please join us at Camille’s on Palmdale Blvd. the first Saturday of every month at 10 am. Talking about the problem hasn’t helped – let’s start doing something.
(And BTW – you don’t have to be a woman to join!)
Sovereignty Soldier says...
Maybe the dismal turnout is due to the same crooks running for office. Maybe people are just sick of playing the game with crooks. Maybe if there were a real man or woman of the people, the people would be able to get excited and involved.

Or maybe there would be if the people got excited enough to get involved.

PK, it’s those mind bending chem trails. Sort of like salt peter for the masses. Saps all your voter energy, makes you happy in squalor and misery. You know, 3 car garage, two paid for SUVs and a sports car, 5 bedroom home, and a fat public pension. The very difinition of squalor and misery in America.

We were just talking at the luncheon I just came from about how all of a sudden people are supposed to be ashamed because they made the kind of choices that afford them a good lifestyle. The numbers of takers and whiners in our society are so vast that their voice is strong enough to suggest that working hard and spending wisely are characteristics of bad people.
It’s the “crawdad” effect – their life is in toilet and they want to bring everyone else down to where they are. Capitalists, on the hand, say “Hey, I’ve got mine and I will help you get yours”.
I look back on my grandparents’ lifestyle and am amazed at how far we’ve come in such a short time.

why is OK for those in the private sector who made good choices be allowed to do well, but NOT those in the public sector, who made good choices?
i would like to see the labor of americans from both sides of the aisle
to move forward, and be compensated accordingly.
but the more private sector workers get screwed out of pay and wages, just seems to make them want to destroy workers in the public sector. the “they screwed me, so instead of going after the ones screwing me, i’m gonna scream until they screw everyone else”?
why is that? these people signed contracts years ago, and now u don’t want their contracts honored because….?

Because, quite simply lancaster, we can’t afford it. The state is beyond broke; so broke they just stole about $30 million from Palmdale and Lancaster alone. Money that would have gone to local jobs. We cannot sustain the level of giving we are currently at.
But I don’t know anyone advocating removing those benefits from the current employees; just the new hires. Kind of like when the grocery workers union agreed to have a different pay/benefit scale for new hires and the aerospace company my husband works for that took away pensions from everyone hired after a particular date.

PK :“We were just talking at the luncheon I just came from about how all of a sudden people are supposed to be ashamed because they made the kind of choices that afford them a good lifestyle. ”
A luncheon in the middle of the day? Who can attend? Certainly, not those who are working! Or trying desperately to find employment of some sort. I bet that room was chock full of housewives with husbands who have good jobs, or the husbands themselves.
Patricia, if you weren’t married, you would be struggling also.
The baby boomers (50-plus) are enjoying the fruits of an unprecedented period of prosperity, along with all of the perks that came with it. They are, essentially, living in a bubble. People who are under 50, and especially those under 40, are in for some major turbulence in our lives. Some of us are already experiencing it.
What “choices” were made to afford your lifestyle? You married the right man? He didn’t die too young? His company didn’t take out a “dead peasant” policy against him? None of your kids live with you and need help?
You are not the norm!
And, Patricia, do us all a favour and stop being so damned smug! OK ?
You say things like this and then you wonder why people are offended? Why people “go off” at you?

lets see toyboy, what would ur 1st lesson be?
have parents that will set u up in a home business, ran out of their back yard?
kiss local politicols asses, so u can run ur business out of ur parents back yards?
how about sitting on a computer all day, and get paid for it, cuz ur parents took all the risks out of the business for u?
thanks, but no thanks toyboy. WHAT I HAVE, I GOT. which makes it good enough for me.
and ur remarks on marriage r a real crowd pleaser. coming from a man who has walked away from marriage and children.
as so many neo cons before u, u claim the right to both mistakes, AND bad life decisions. yet deny all others the same.

“WHAT I HAVE, I GOT. which makes it good enough for me.”
But you want me to give more and more. You demand it and vilify me and make fun of me if I try to defend what I earned.
Nobody denied anybody the right to correct themselves; you made that up like so much of your last comment.
But you knew that.
The taxes your business pays, could it pay for another employee? If it could, does the bookkeeper and CPA cost yet another employee? So you have 3 unproductive employees working for you that do nothing but keep you right with Uncle Sam. Are you happy about that?
If you put 3 more people to work you could lower your costs to produce and offer your customers a lower cost. Maybe your customers are captive. Maybe you have a contract to counsel trouble kids that the court system sends your way. Maybe your business is one person with a steady supply of tax payer supported at risk youths.
Did you have to go to sexual abuse counseling before you got those lucrative contracts? Did they do a background check to make sure you are not a sex offender? When you got busted for that sex offense how did you get it expunged from your record so you could keep those at risk kids flowing through your door? Who did you know that has that kind of legal horsepower? Do those parents know your past?
Lanc, rumors suck.

I have always said we are a rich enough country to TEMPORARILY help someone who has suffered a setback to get back on track. Using that assistance to re-train or educated for a particular career field and then go on and contribute back to society in a meaningful way by paying taxes and donating to charity makes the welfare system worthwhile as well as the ones using it.
But we will never be rich enough to pay the way for those who scam the system and never pay in a single dime.

Randy Hall says...
I’m not “pissed” at you.
I didn’t paint welfare recipients as less than human; you made that up.
I worry that your liberal compassion is destroying inner-city families and driving them into poverty. It is your side that has pushed this welfare state so far it is destroying a black inner-city youth’s chances at even the barest hope of something more that liberal compassion which is causing their poverty and dispair. If I didn’t know better I think you hate inner-city kids and want to doom them to a substandard existence. I’m beginning to wonder now since the evidence is so stark that liberal compassion is destroying inner-city families why you keep pushing it as some sort of required virtue. Is there some sort of kick you get is destroying the hope of those poor black kids of the inner-city.

there are MANY issues that keep our our young inner city youth back. u want to blame it ALL on welfare. and it just doesn’t fly.
pk, i wasn’t directing my welfare remarks at u. i know you’ve maintained
the opinion that there are those who can and ARE helped by government assistance. something i agree with.
those who abuse the system, leave the welfare category, and join the criminal category. AS THEY SHOULD.
but TB insists that they are ALL one and the same. which is bullshit. and seems to think the government should
request NOTHING from him, although to hear him, he’s doing well.
but seems to think he owes nothing, as far as giving back. between reagan and bush, he’s seen his taxes drop by something along the lines of 40%. so excuse me if i don’t shed a tear for his whinning.
for a man who has had EVERY break, he just isn’t that put upon.

“but TB insists that they are ALL one and the same.” I didn’t say this you made it up.
“there are MANY issues that keep our our young inner city youth back. u want to blame it ALL on welfare. and it just doesn’t fly.” Welfare is the main cause of illegitimate children and single-parent homes are a #1 reason for poverty. Welfare may not be the only reason but in like 9 out to 10 cases it is the reason.
“did welfare destroy rex? or are u over simplifying the problem TB?” If Welfare made Rex then Welfare should be a required High School course.
Welfare didn’t destroy Rex and it doesn’t destroy many, but it does harm in number sso great you should be ashamed of yourself for support it inner-city blacks.
I totally agree if abuse is found, they should become a criminal. A criminal on food stamps thanks to your political ideology.

roxi, TB seems to forget that WHITE people are still the MAJORITY of welfare recipients. so i gave him a pass on the black statement. but it does kinda point out his ignorance on the subject.
pk, DOES HE??? does he work harder then one of them inner city black moms that DON’T take welfare, and STILL manage to put a roof over their kids heads, and food on the table?
why do we all pretend TB is such a hard worker? the amount of time he spends on this blog alone, makes me question that statement. throw in the time he spends reading the “american thinker” and time spent kissing rex’s ass, (something i would consider work, but he may not) makes me question this mythical amount of work he tells everyone he does.
my mechanic has something like 8 employees, but he is at his shop till 8 at night on numerous occasions, helping every which way. and i can assure u he doesn’t have the time to burn, our lil TB has on here alone.

Exactly Roxi, you’re right. Most Dems don’t like welfare abuse any more than anyone else does. My only question is why do they keep voting for candidates who support such abuse?
And no I don’t think Randy works any harder than an inner-city single mother but then again I wouldn’t want welfare scammers taking money away from her either. I want her to keep more of what she earns so she can pay for health insurance; so she can pay for tutors for her children if needed – this is why I vote Republican!

Black illegitimate births have rocketed up with the rise of the welfare state. Since whites do get the majority of welfare due to their higher numbers their illegitimate birth rate is inching up too. Welfare is still the cause and to make fun of it is to ignore reality.
As far as being busy, I could teach your mechanic how to be more successful and work like I do. Our shops sound very similar. I used to have to work that hard too. I made some wonderful changes and give better service and better quality, on time at not at 8pm.
Since sex is the cause of illegitimate births, why teach them how to have safe sex. If sex is the cause of births wouldn’t it be best to teach them how to avoid sex?
Also lanc, if welfare made Rex a success or allowed him to be successful why isn’t welfare a high school course?

1st time or 2nd. wasn’t palin’s lil girl taught to avoid sex? how did that work out? just cuz MANY kids have family resources to take care of their children’s offspring, doesn’t mean all them little girls and boys raised in ultra NO SEX homes, doesn’t mean their not breeding.
and even having the resources, doesn’t mean these NO SEX family’s aren’t tapping into government handouts, AS PALIN SEEMS TO BE DOING WITH TRIP’s healthcare.
kinda like the welfare we’re giving to ur church, in the form of aN athletic park, or infrastructure to LBC.

Considering all the disasters we’ve had of late, and wars that are raging, seemingly without end; it doesn’t surprise me that so many people are broke, on the streets and begging for financial aid. Massive lay-offs, some out of work for 2 years with their savings, homes, everything gone. Is it any surprise that the Welfare State has grown to astronomical proportions?!!!
5,000 Vets, wounded from just the Iraqi war who can’t work and feed their families!! Refugees from floods, hurricanes – etc!
Randy, you’re living in the 20th century with welfare babies, etc. Yes, there are a lot of illegitimate babies out there – and there’s a lot of folks in a world of hurt.
What is the Conservative answer to these problems? We have YET to see a major corporation, besides WalMart step up and start hiring. These are people with Masters Degrees that are driving cab. Is that what your America is to you??

Lanc, any mechanic in my book is an exceptional person. The level of knowledge they must obtain to be successful is awesome. Working till 8pm because you are busy doesn’t make you any less a wonderful mechanic. I’ve overhauled my business model so I don’t have to do that any more. With that said, here are some things to ask your mechanic to find out what kind of businessman he is. Sorry to assume a male mechanic, I have had an exceptional female mechanic work for me before.
Ask him what his GP is. Ask about ARO, and NOP, all these things should roll off a good businessman’s tongue. He should know them or he’s working till 8pm not because he’s busy but because his business model is outdated. If his numbers are “best practices” then he’s working late because he needs to hire more help and is being greedy with his profits.
I’ll give you my GP, ARO, NOP number later as mine are very close to “best practices.”
“What is the Conservative answer to these problems?” Putting people to work. I’ve pointed out how government eats up profits of mine that could hire 3 more people. So getting government off my back is a good first step.
