Insanity
The definition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing, exactly the same way, and expecting a different result.

The following was sent to me by email and it certainly gives us food for thought.

The U.S. Post Service was established in 1775 – they’ve had 234 years to get it right; it is broke, and even though heavily subsidized, it can’t compete with private sector FedExp and UPS services.

Social Security was established in 1935 – they’ve had 74 years to get it right; it is broke.

Fannie Mae was established in 1938 – they’ve had 71 years to get it right; it is broke. Freddie Mac was established in 1970 – they’ve had 39 years to get it right; it is broke. Together Fannie and Freddie have now led the entire world into the worst economic collapse in 80 years.

The War on Poverty was started in 1964 – they’ve had 45 years to get it right; $1 trillion of our hard earned money is confiscated each year and transferred to “the poor”; it hasn’t worked.

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965 – they’ve had 44 years to get it right; they are both broke; and now our government dares to mention them as models for all US health care.

AMTRAK was established in 1970 – they’ve had 39 years to get it right; last year they bailed it out as it continues to run at a loss!

This year, a trillion dollars was committed in the massive political payoff called the Stimulus Bill of 2009; it shows NO sign of working; it’s been used to increase the size of governments across America, and raise government salaries while the rest of us suffer from economic hardships. It has yet to create a single new private sector job. Our national debt projections (approaching $10 trillion) have increased 400% in the last six months.

“Cash for Clunkers” was established in 2009 and went broke in 2009 – - after 80% of the cars purchased turned out to be produced by foreign companies, and dealers nationwide are buried under bureaucratic paperwork demanded by a government that is not yet paying them what was promised.

So with a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that each and every “service” shoved down our throats by an over-reaching government turns into disaster, how could any informed American trust our government to run or even set policies for America’s health care system – - 17% of our economy?

Maybe each of us has a personal responsibility to let others in on this brilliant record before 2010, and then help remove from office those who are voting to destroy capitalism and destroy our grandchildren’s future.

I would also add that when I was a kid nobody I knew received free or reduced price lunches at school. When my kids were little there some that did but most didn’t. PSD currently reports something like 80% of the kids not only receive free/reduced lunches but breakfast as well. If this is working why is the percentage growing? What will it be like in the next generation?

Pk, thanks for changing the subject, I was afraid I was going to read about this blog in the Enquirer…oh, I mean the AV Press-front page headline with the Kennedy death info in the classifieds…again. Just Kidding!!!!!

I think that these statistics are/may be right – but, we have to consider POLITICS. Different conflicting administrations through the years sabotaged the programs – or voted down/divided the funding so their pork belly cause would succeed instead.

All I can say is ‘we ain’t dead yet’. The U.S.P.O. lost out on email and didn’t keep up with FedEx or UPS with service (much like the U.S. car co.’s v.s. Toyota); uh, the War on Poverty did help me & my son when my ex took off and joined the circus (he was a journalist); yes, AMTRAK does run @ a loss-do not know why but they sure do sell very expensive tickets.

I guess the answer is: ’Where’s the Money’!! One answer….why do we have Bush & Kennedy dynasties in this country Why is most of our money overseas in secret bank accounts? WHO is the FED – and why do they decide if we live or die?

I give up.

I have read this blog on several other sites and disagree with it as much here as I did when I read it elsewhere. The fallacy in the reasoning revolves around how we define “broken.”

An example is Amtrak. The fact that it isn’t running at a profit doesn’t necessarily mean that it is broken. It is providing public transportation to millions of Americans every single day.
The Cash for Clunkers will result in millions of gas guzzling polluting vehicles being taken off the streets. And, it has kept thousands of auto dealers from going bankrupt.

One could also argue that feeding more and more children breakfast and lunch is an indication that a program IS working.

Could all of these programs listed in the blog do better. Of course, there is little any of us do that we couldn’t do better. But, lets not throw the baby out with the bath water.

I agree with roxi, and add my thanks for changing the subject. The steady diet of hate was turning me into an anorexic.

But Bill.. I think it showcases that the best way to run a business is to keep Government out of it.. The question you have to ask yourself is.. If any of the companies PK highlighted were yours, would you keep the managment team responsible?

NS, I think the point Bill is making is that some things don’t need a profit motive. One problem is what gives people incentive to work?

In government if you are given a budget and you don’t spend it all your are punished by having your budget cut. My plan would be to give a percentage of the budget savings to the CEO. This would give him an incentive to cut costs.

It looks like U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is on his way out…

Here is an editorial from the Sunday edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, in which they basically lambast him. Several independent polls are also indicating that Reid is probably going to get trounced by the GOP come election time:

Enough is enough, Harry. Stop the childish bullying!

by Sherman Frederick
Las Vegas Review-Journal

Sun., Aug. 30 2009

This newspaper traces its roots to before Las Vegas was Las Vegas.

We’ve seen cattle ranches give way to railroads. We chronicled the construction of Hoover Dam. We reported on the first day of legalized gambling. The first hospital. The first school. The first church. We survived the mob, Howard Hughes, the Great Depression, several recessions, two world wars, dozens of news competitors and any number of two-bit politicians who couldn’t stand scrutiny, much less criticism.

We’re still here doing what we do for the people of Las Vegas and Nevada. So, let me assure you, if we weathered all of that, we can damn sure outlast the bully threats of Sen. Harry Reid.

On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber’s board members for a meet-‘n’-greet and a photo. One of the last in line was the Review-Journal’s director of advertising, Bob Brown, a hard-working Nevadan who toils every day on behalf of advertisers. He has nothing to do with news coverage or the opinion pages of the Review-Journal.

Yet, as Bob shook hands with our senior U.S. senator in what should have been nothing but a gracious business setting, Reid said: “I hope you go out of business.”

Later, in his public speech, Reid said he wanted to let everyone know that he wants the Review-Journal to continue selling advertising because the Las Vegas Sun is delivered inside the Review-Journal.

Such behavior cannot go unchallenged.

You could call Reid’s remark ugly and be right. It certainly was boorish. Asinine? That goes without saying.

But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid’s remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was — a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he’s shaking them down.

No citizen should expect this kind of behavior from a U.S. senator. It is certainly not becoming of a man who is the majority leader in the U.S. Senate. And it absolutely is not what anyone would expect from a man who now asks Nevadans to send him back to the Senate for a fifth term.

If he thinks he can push the state’s largest newspaper around by exacting some kind of economic punishment in retaliation for not seeing eye to eye with him on matters of politics, I can only imagine how he pressures businesses and individuals who don’t have the wherewithal of the Review-Journal.

For the sake of all who live and work in Nevada, we can’t let this bully behavior pass without calling out Sen. Reid. If he’ll try it with the Review-Journal, you can bet that he’s tried it with others. So today, we serve notice on Sen. Reid that this creepy tactic will not be tolerated.

We won’t allow you to bully us. And if you try it with anyone else, count on going through us first.

That’s a promise, not a threat.

And it’s a promise to our readers, not to you, Sen. Reid.

Sherman Frederick (sfrederick@reviewjournal.com) is publisher of the Review-Journal and president of Stephens Media.

“An example is Amtrak. The fact that it isn’t running at a profit doesn’t necessarily mean that it is broken. It is providing public transportation to millions of Americans every single day.”

It isn’t just that it doesn’t turn a profit but that it is subsidized by the taxpayers. This practice removes any incentive they have for creating a system that customers like well enough to pay what it costs. But if you apply the same standard then we should also fork over tax money to airlines and rental car companies. Not smart.

“The Cash for Clunkers will result in millions of gas guzzling polluting vehicles being taken off the streets. And, it has kept thousands of auto dealers from going bankrupt.”

Perhaps it did remove some of the gas guzzlers but maybe if we did nothing we could have reduced gasoline consumption even more by forcing those folks to use mass transit. Which taxpayers also subsidize because there aren’t enough users to make it sustain itself. Again not smart.

As far as the dealers are concerned, I don’t know a one of them who has received a check as of yet. But what happens when the purchasers of those cars can’t afford the payments? The dealers won’t mind but the lenders will suffer – up to the moment we bail them out AGAIN.

“One could also argue that feeding more and more children breakfast and lunch is an indication that a program IS working.”

Yes, I suppose one could argue this if the end goal is to transfer the responsibility of caring for our children from the parents to the government. We are already to the point of providing free immunizations at the school sites; should we also set broken bones? How about handing out clothing and shoes? My original question was where do we draw the line? Should we be like Germany before the war and just turn our kids over to the state to raise?

Pk, that’s a bit extreme – handing our kids over to the state for them to raise, especially now since the state doesn’t have any money. But, that’s what they did in Merry Ol’ England just 1.5 centuries ago, shipped off the boys to the new world as slaves.

Working under a government or state contract as an independent contractor, it takes at least 3-6 months before the check arrives. Has been like this for years.

I don’t have very much sympathy for people that just up-and-leave their families and aren’t under any pressing circumstances (i.e. military service, university, etc.)

I think it’s selfish and egotistical to put your needs before the needs of your family.

I will always be there to take care of my parents when they need me, and help them in any way I can. It isn’t always fun taking my mom and my grandparents to their doctor’s appointments, but it’s the least I can do, considering how much love and nurturing they gave me when I was a child.

I don’t particularly care for people who abandon their parents and grandparents for their own interests. But yet, that seems to be the “American way” now more than ever.

Flushing Blackwater
…In addition, Blackwater is being investigated by the Justice Department for possible crimes ranging from weapons smuggling to manslaughter and by the IRS for possible tax evasion. It is being sued in federal courts by scores of Iraqi civilians for alleged war crimes and extrajudicial killings. Two of its men have pleaded guilty to weapons-smuggling charges; another pleaded guilty to the unprovoked manslaughter of an Iraqi civilian, and five others have been indicted on similar counts. The US military is investigating Blackwater’s killing of civilians in Afghanistan in May, and reports are emerging that the company may be implicated in the CIA’s extraordinary rendition program….

EXACTLY. Why did Bush hire PRIVATE security in the first place when the Marines could’ve done it? Sounds like double-taxation to me. Now they’ve been hired for until the 4th until Dyne Corp Int. ‘is ready’. : http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/09/02/us/politics/AP-US-Iraq-Blackwater.html

when cheney and bush started these 2 wars, they knew that if they instigated a draft, they would lose support of the american people. there was no way we had enough troops to fight both wars, and being the sneaky lil pussys they are, they figured a way to get around public opion and make a shitload of money for thier GOP contributers by bring in thier own lil private army.

for all the talk of losing our freedoms from the right wing on this blog, you would think a well armed private army, completely intrenched in our military would give them pause!

since they now make up about 51% of our military, we would have to pull half our presence in iraq and afghanistan if we were to shut it down at this point.

one way to fix this is to have MORE GOVT. BIULDING UP OUR MILITARY.

but who knows, i mean, it’s not like arming 3rd world mercenary’s has ever gone wrong on us before.

ANOTHER CLUSTERF*CK BROUGHT TO US BY THE GOP CHEERLEADERS ON THIS BLOG!

Since this blog is about Obama, and there’s talk about Bush, I’ll bring up Bill Clinton.

Bill Clinton in his book says he wish he would have told the truth about inhaling and about Monica.

Jimmy Carter. Enough said.
