Friendship Bridge
On Thursday, June 26th, the Antelope Valley chapter of Friendship Bridge will be hosting a dinner and evening with the renowned scientist, author and television personality, Dr. Art Ulene.

In addition to listening to the wit and wisdom of Dr. Ulene, the purpose of the event is to raise funds for the Friendship Bridge micro-loan program which provides funding and education for entrepreneurial women in impoverished countries. This program has proved a great success in other parts of the world and the AV chapter, “Flor del Desierto” (Flowers of the Desert) has chosen a village in Guatemala as the site of our “bank”.

This event will be held at the Antelope Valley Country Club and it begins at 6:30 pm.

For tickets and more information, write me a private message or call me at 274-1277.

Screw other countries and help the people that are American citizens. I get very tired of hearing about helping other countries when people right here need help. This country is going into the toilet and your group has the nerve to help another country, time to wise up.

Why don’t you pick a small town in America where the women can’t even afford to get out of town and form this
Friendship Bridge micro-loan program, great idea, just the wrong country to do it in. You people have your head in the sand.

Just because someone is willing to help women in other countries does not mean they don’t help women in this country.

In this country there is already a small business loan program that gives special consideration to female owned businesses. There is also free public education and certainly help with food, clothing, and housing. These are forced participation programs which I support every time I pay taxes.

Friendship Bridge offers micro-loans in such small amounts that would be of little help to Americans but tremendous assistance to those living in impoverished countries.

And unlike American assistance programs, this is voluntary. No one is forcing you to buy a ticket.

America and the Poor – What it’s like to Be Poor in America

By Black Betty

I can’t work with out being medicated and I can’t buy my medicine because I don’t have a job. The welfare program has not offered me any assistance with child care so I can get a job. See the circle and how it goes around and around. Fortunatly I am wise enoght to be able to make a little money so I can survive. I have to because I know the US Government is not going to help me. Yet there are foreign familys that live here in America that have their own business (tax free for 8 years), a new Lexus, their own house, and they recieve 1000.00 dollars in food stamps a month to feed there five children. If your an American living in America you need to get a job so we can support these people so they can become american too. If your poor in America put your faith in God because that is all the real hope you’ll ever have.

Raising money to send out of this country is about the worse thing you can do. When paople here need all the help they can get to get on their feet. More and more will soon be unemployed due to the cost of fuel, yet you ask people to give to help another country. Very sad indeed.

Friendship Bridge is one of the most interesting an innovative programs I’ve seen. The micro-loans being made to these women are so small, less than a weeks worth of groceries for most of us, and yet one of these loans often means a lifetime of self-sufficiency for a woman and her family in a country where there are no alternatives.
The fact is that we actually have tons of programs in this country to help those that want to help themselves, and even programs to help those that don’t.
The money raised through friendship bridge is creating sustainable jobs for women and children living in desperate poverty. I think it would be a big help for people who think they are poor in the United States to look at the type of poverty that exists in other country, because the poorest of us is still in much better shape than 90% of the worlds population.

Well, one great thing about it being my money and my choice, I can spend it however I like.
For the record though, I have lived and worked with the poor in really depressed communities though, including areas in this country where a good portion of the population still lacks indoor plumbing. Poverty to that scale is a shame no matter where you find it, but most of it in this country is a matter of choice to one degree or another.
Making the choice to help empower these women doesn’t take away from what can be done here at home.

138, the fact is all countrys need help of some kind. They all have poverty and they must learn to take care of their own. We have people right here eating out of garbage cans. We have people right here living on the streets, we have people losing their homes and their jobs. We have kids going hungry and yes we have women looking for a job to feed their kids with out a father. We have kids that can’t afford to go to college, we have people that can’t afford med’s yet people like PK and Denise would rather take care of Guatemala women than try and help people right here. Right now there are all kinds of people from Gustemala here illegally sucking off our system, running this country into the ground. This friendship bridge should be within your own country. I hope not many people fall for this and don’t give a dime.

As I previously stated, the United States already has an SBA program in place. The SBA not only provides loans to start up a business, but loans for business expansion as well. They also provide education and mentoring from others who have been successful in the same type of endeavor.

Friendship Bridge provides “micro-loans” meaning very small loans ($150-$250) which would be of very little use to someone living here. They are however a huge benefit to someone whose daily wages are only $2-$3.

But consider this; for every small business owner we help in Guatemala to become financially independent that means fewer people needing to uproot their families and flee (probably illegally) to the United States.

It’s one thing to gripe about the problem of illegal immigration but another to actually do something about it.

On May 4th, 2007, the community was completely leveled by a 2 mile wide, EF5 tornado.
The business community was completely wiped out and there were almost no homes left in this community of 1500, and even with all that, they are trying to rebuild, and become one of the first all “green” cities in the United States.

I was really happy to see the Friendship Bridge program because it’s an incredible, self-sustaining model that lifts people up by giving them the tools to pull themselves out of poverty.
Here in this country, we have a lot of programs for the poor that have become handouts, not hand ups. Maybe the answer is turning our existing welfare programs into a model that expects people to work or start their own businesses, but also has to be guaranteed by the community and paid back. If we had some accountability in the programs we already have, maybe they would actually work as intended.
That said, participating in something like Friendship Bridge doesn’t take anything away from Domestic programs, and it may just be what it takes to keep people inside their home countries instead of fleeing to ours.

bear: This country [the United States] sends so much money out of the country, and the countries it sends that money to uses that money against us.”

In many ways that is quite true in that so-called foreign aid is most often used to bolster the interests and to prolong the reigns of puppet oligarchies whose only purpose is to serve the interests of US-based multinationals and the US State Department (e.g., Somoza, Pahlavi, Marcos, etc.). And, yes, we are often “repaid” in the form of what has to be known as “Blowback” – the social phenomenon in which American citizens too often pay the consequences of “their” government’s behavior vis-a-vis the Third World (i.e., “911”).

Also, for those concerned with the way in which the Friendship Bridge program may impact undocumented immigration, it may well serve to promote indigenous capitalist development within Guatemala, thereby reducing the level of its people’s desperation and, therefore, quite possibly reducing the level of undocumented immigration.

It would be nice if you could reciprocate and not criticize my teaching ability.

My beef with Billy is that nowhere in Patricia’s main post did it say anything about illegal immigrants. Though, he feels the unscrupulous need to insert them into yet another blog because of his personal and often demonstrated dislike of Patricia herself. Billy’s only issue with our group was that we chose a Spanish-language name, nothing else.

Bear and 138 – When Oprah built the orphanage in Africa, she took a look of abuse because people said she should spend her money here. She had her reasons and they were valid. PK and I have rarely agreed, if ever, on anything, but I support her project because it doesn’t matter where in the world the Friendship Bridge is being build—the fact is it’s happening and those women do need assistance.

Bear and 138, it shouldn’t rub you the wrong way because PK is doing something that uplifts a group not on our soil. I agree with the people that thought Oprah should have helped the children right here. She is making her money here and here is where she should be helping. Plenty of kids in foster homes here that need help, when they hit 18 they are out on their own.

Oprah could have built trade schools to help keep the kids here off the streets and from selling drugs for a living.

What we have here on this blog site are only four, (4) astute and intelligent bloggers, besides yours truly. In no particular order we have Randy Hall. He knows his stuff and backs everything up wih “facts.” The left hates him as they hate me. Then we have Guy Marsh. A “genius” with words and never, ever a mistake in punctuation and a true believer in what he thinks. Very admirable. Next we have a psycho named 00100, and a hundred other handles too numerous to mention. And finally there is Larry Hobson. A most “common sense” blogger to be sure.
Randy Hall always knows how to “shut up” ignorant bloggers in a (nice way.)
Guy Marsh usually paints a picture in his prose which no normal right thinking person could ever accept, and I think he knows that.
John Wells is quite intelligent but he is fanatic in his beliefs, so hardly anyone pays him any mind.
Lastly, we come to Larry. A more “common sense” guy than one could ever find. He gets attacked daily and like the “energizer bunny”, he just keeps coming back. But it seems like Larry has softened his responses, and what a shame.
I like total honesty. I remember that a certain blogger took issue because someone pointed out that his baseball cap was “reversed” in his profile picture. The blogger became quite perturbed and stated “homo hater, homophobe”, etc.,just because of a blog comment.
Instead of complaining, why not just come out of the closet? No one would be surprised I betcha.

I was with you until the last part of your last sentence!

For the most part, I agree.

I like total honesty. I remember that a certain blogger took issue because someone pointed out that his baseball cap was “reversed” in his profile picture. The blogger became quite perturbed and stated “homo hater, homophobe”, etc.,just because of a blog comment.

Again, why the obsession here? What relevance does my own sexual orientation have to do with my blogging activities on this site?

Well, kelter, your “orientation” has everything to “do with it.” If, as I have been advised by many private PM messages that your significant other is a mexican, then your comments carry no weight as you have an axe to grind. Your PRO MEXICAN-OPEN BORDER CRAP is just that, CRAP.
BTW..No white guys out there? lol

What are you talking about? I don’t have a “significant other”. Either someone is blatantly lying to you or you are extremely delusional.

So if I make a donation, am I going to assist a woman in this third world nation start a tortilla business. What would this woman do. She could never export her product, the health agencies would never allow tortilla’s made in a mud hut come here. Where would she ship them to? How about funding a American citizen, woman, start her own business here that meets all of the standards of our country.

I hear a lot of women from Guatamala are house keepers. Sounds like they already have all the funding they need here in the US already, tax free money.

Bear, Oprah has helped families and far too many children to even count who live in the U.S. The issue was that it’s her money…and she had a right to spend it the way she wishes.

She has paid for many, many kids to get college educations. She has paid to relocate families from crime infested neighborhoods. She’s done it all.

But like Bill Gates, whose mother was the inspiration for him to get involved in Africa and do something about the deplorable AIDS epidemic there, people with money have a right to spend it as they wish.

Oprah said she got tired of the kids here wanting the latest fashions, toys to entertain themselves, etc. She wanted to give the gift of education.

Bear, people don’t seem to realize that we are all somehow connected on this earth. The fruits of one’s labors in a distant land, eventually trickle our way. Just as the sins we and others commit in other lands, have repercussions for us as well.

It’s not the Trickle Down Theory. It’s the Tickle Around Theory

I hope everyone will take a look at Bill Warford’s column in today’s AV Press. In it he details Dr. Ulene’s passion for Guatemala and the value this program will bring to the women in this country.

DBEARDW, help our own before we help others. So many kids right here that need help so much to do right here. It might be her money but if it wasn’t for the people right here she wouldn’t have it at all.

We help “our own” every time we pay taxes. The rest that we get to keep we can spend any damn way we choose.

Bear,

I often hear people talk about the “massive” amounts of children that “need help.” Which children are you referring to? I can certainly understand children with illnesses, but can you please identify who the “kids right here that need help” are? Are you talking about foster kids? Orphans? Are there kids out there wandering the streets looking for food?

This is a serious question.

Children are the same any where in the world, women are the same any where in the world. Women and children right here in this country need help, why would any one think its better to help people in another country before helping people right here? Foster kids are one place? What about micro loans to these kids that at the age of 18 get thrown out of foster care to live on their own? Kids all across this country need help, they live in proverty right here. You don’t see them like you do in these other countries because yes there are far more in those other countries. But these other countries need to take care of their own. We cannot take care of the world we need to take care of America.

WOULDN’T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH?
“My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of the Iraq regime has been completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now time to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short . The United Kingdom , Spain , Bulgaria , Australia , and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains every one not on the first list. Most of the world’s nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war. THEN EVERY YEAR THERE AFTER It’ll GO TO OUR SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM SO IT WONT GO BROKE IN 20 YEARS.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine ? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home . On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France or maybe China .

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France , Germany , and Russia . Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bonne chance, mezamies.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many UN diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don’t care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2 its president and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra thousand tanks and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put ‘em? Yep, border security.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty – starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we’ll be drilling for oil in Alaska- which will take care of this country’s oil needs for decades to come. If you’re an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, ‘darn tootin.’

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America It is time to eliminate homelessness in America To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thank you guys. We owe you and we won’t forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God bless America .. Thank you and good night.”

If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier.

(Please forward this to at least ten friends and see what happens! Let’s get this to every USA computer!)
