Local Theatre - In a Garage or Not In a Garage, that is the question
Since local theatre has been painted as substandard and worse by SOME, (whose actual intentions are unclear), I thought it time to post a schedule of current and upcoming productions.

These shows are being performed at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, The Palmdale Playhouse and the brand new Arbor Court Community Theatre, none of which can be considered garages, even by those who wish them to be.

These shows are produced by local talent whose dedication, passion and unselfish commitment to Theatre Arts, which should never be questioned.

Hundreds of amazing souls who allow time in their busy lives to open up doors for so many to experience the magic of live performance.

Help support them by adding as many of these shows to your entertainment schedule as you can.

Actually The Antelope Valley Thespians group did convert a large garage into a small, intimate and very nice theatre..

They do amazing work..

The AV College also presents in their Black Box Theatre and soon will be moving into their new gorgeous facility.

There is also a group in Tehachapi in a theatre they built..

REAL THEATRE? LOL.

What the hell is that to you raymond?
Tell us all what REAL THEATRE is..

How many shows have you seen from any of the groups raymond?

OR to you REAL THEATRE only happens in NY?

Censorial?? LMAO!! Who and-or what is being censored raymond?

There are Theatre cabals in the Antelope Valley? Must be talking about one of the 3 who have been here for over 35 years.THERE is nothing farther from the truth..

The theatre community in this town works together constantly in an effort to provide affordable entertainment for everyone..

The theatre community in this town work together constantly in an effort to provide opportunities for EVERYONE to live out their dreams.

You are clueless.. You have no idea what the theatre community is in the Antelope Valley..

But “Keep On Keeping On” raymond, as I am sure the readers who live and love this HICK TOWN, want to see more of who you really are and what you truly think of this community..

NS I do not know you but what you are doing is very commendable. How (or) why anybody questioning this is beyond me. Is the hatred coming from jealously about the success you seem to be having, or perhaps failure on other person(s) to do the same? I dont get it.

The ONLY one who knows what is behind cunneff’s assault on community theatre in general and Me and this HICK TOWN specifically is raymond cuneff and God..

I could guess that it has something to do with my success versus his two failed radio gigs, but I do not want to speculate and be accused of attacking him..

I am sure raymond’s past successes are admirable and he should wear them with great pride.. No one should marginalize his memories of the good times anymore than he should chastise those of us still in the fight for survival and doing what we can to stay above water..

Thank you for your kind comments, I and all the amazing folks who work with me appreciate them..

Wayne,

Why do you always feel the need to exacerbate everything?

You claim that you want to get along with people, yet, you continuously put up linguistically incendiary posts while maintaining that you want “civility”. In layman’s terminology, this is called “drama”.

It was wrong for him to call our area a “hick town” (It isn’t! Try Blythe CA, Pahrump NV or Umatilla OR!)but you continue to provoke him with incendiary remarks and by facetiously calling him “raymond”.

But it is what I have come to expect..

He is trashing good people who have dedicated so much of their time and energy to provide a service to a community he calls a HICK TOWN

Refers to LPAC and ACCT as nothing more than Garages!

This coming from a man who has never seen, as far as I know, these shows he claims are NOT REAL THEATRE..

I have not called ray any names, or trashed his accomplishments..

I did not refer to him in the negative..

NOW go read what he has posted and then come back and counsel me..

So my using raymond when referring to mr. cunneff justifies, in matthew world, the comments penned by mr. cunneff where he attacks me, this town, theatre in this town and all the people who support theatre in this town.

EVEN mr. cuneff’s initial Insult hurl came inside a blog that had nothing to do with theatre.

Ok then… I get it now..

Thanks for the clarification

I moved to east Lancaster in 1990 when it was definately more of a hick town, much safer, substantially less crime. After a few years it became less of a hick town and more of a gang-banging, crime ridden town. I often heard gun shots, there was crack-dealing on my corner.

So I moved to kindof a redneck/hicktown area, if you wanna call it that. Very safe.

I remember doing a couple one act ‘Theater of the Absurd’ at a place called the ETC on Division and Ave I in the early 70’s. Very early 70’s. Not many venues at all to perform then. We used the gym at the college. In High School, we used Park View’s auditorium. We have come a long way baby! (I would never call Lancaster Hick, perhaps Palmdale, lol.)

Rent is an interesting and intriguing choice, not so much because of the theme but because of the roles. Very difficult show to cast as the music, for most amateurs is impossible.

However, unlike Ray Cunneff, I am of the opinion the talent pool in this community is superb as is the quality of most of the the productions presented. It angers me a citizen would take such a negative and snobbish attitude toward community theatre. Perhaps it would increase his compassion and understanding to know a majority of the finest actors in history all started learning their craft in community theatres all over the world. I would be happy to provide a list.

Love Rent and agree with you that it is a very tough show to produce. I know the Director, actors and tech staff well and can tell you, it will be a great show..

We thought about doing it but in the Blackbox, CST is presenting on the Main Staqe..

And BTW.. Ray Cunneff has never seen a performance by my company and we have over 250 of them over the past 9 years. Fairly sure as well that has has not seen many, if any at all, of the other productions presented by DOT, PRT, CST or AVC Arts. His comments are cemented by some rage against me as a person and he chooses to assault local theatre in general in the hopes of damaging me, my family, my friends and all the amazing people who support what we do..

I know who I am and who we are and there is nothing Ray Cunneff can post in here that can or will change anything I do or we do.. So let him attack at will and let the world see exactly who he is and what he is truly all about.

This HICK town he refers to would love to see more..My folder, with his comments past and present in it, could use a few more ray gems..

Great Music, rock and roll based.. Story of young adults with a variety of issues trying to survive in a very tough world..

You have an underscore of racial equality as the author, who died just before he could see the opening of his show, created characters who are all color blind..

Two are dieing of Aids, a bisexual sexy woman who everyone desires and she plays the game very well, and the cast of 15 who will have you angry, happy and sad…

The music, to me, is as good as any ever written for the staqe..

MATURE AUDIENCES..

Fresh made coffee or Earl Grey Tea with a variety of flavorings, blended drinks, including lowfat, nonfat, or sugar free. Sodas.

Burgers, fresh cut fries. This week’s store hours are 10-4. Starting next week we open at 6:30am.

Beginning next week, we will have breakfast crossiants with or without eggs, bagels, and whatever else my wife or customers want.

Wippy’s Drive Thru Coffee and Burgers
230 Federal Drive (Division Ave) Between K and L in Lancaster, right across from Bank of America.

I want to thank those of you that have been there. We are struggling to stay open. Owning a business is no guarentee in these times. We will stay content if we continue to break even. My wife, son, and daughter are running the show there. My daughter will be volunteering her time there a few hours every morning.

And thankyou, No Spin, for asking.

Good idea, Matt. I’ll run it by Jenny.

There have been bloggers on this site that have showed up to Wippy’s while I was there. I won’t name any names because I don’t want to exclude anyone. You know who you are and I thank you.

There have been bloggers here that have frequented Wippy’s while I wasn’t there and have informed me, and I thank you also. I also thank those of you that have frequented without my knowing it.

A fact that might interest some. Most of those that have been to Wippy’s from this site have been this sites non-Conservatives.

Thankyou for allowing me to be myself on this site and understanding that I’m not going to kiss ass here to get people to come. You obviously respect that.

And I respect you for that.

Now enough of that. It’s time to get back to pulling liberals out of their Obama zombie state. What has Obama said lately that I can pick on?

Thinking maybe you could cater a cast party at the theatre after some performances?

Come up with a menu we could pre-order and have you deliver after the show..

We have concessions in house but a menu of sandwiches that can be delivered after a show, might sell with the cast..

Thoughts?

Rent, one of my daughter and my favorites, is a rock opera and very gritty. It’s a modern version of La Boheme basically, but with amazing characters and even better music.

I know a lot of people who love musical theater but do not much care for the gritty, urban, darkness of Rent.

I’m a huge fan of Idena Menzel, one of the original stage actors in Rent (and in Wicked), and I saw her in this. I’ve also seen in a few times with other casts, and I’m looking forward to seeing what AV theater brings to the play.

RENT will be an exciting theatrical roller coaster ride for anyone going to see it. The show attracted some of the finest singers and actors in the Antelope Valley showcasing their amazing talent. The Vocal Director and Choreographer and arguably the best at what they do.

As I have stated before, the talent pool in the AV is immense and every audition results in new discoveries.

Alice in Wonderland placed 20 kids on stage for 5 weeks who had not been on stage before other than in a middle school cafeteria..

Street Car Named Desire cast includes 4 adults who the valley has never seen on stage and they are all excellent in their roles. Intensely dramatic scenes are being rehearsed and rehearsed over and over again in order to tell this incredible story to Antelope Valley audiences..

This weekend Auditions for It’s A Wonderful Life conclude and The Outsiders begin. On the 18th, Auditions for GREASE start, followed by Blithe Spirit the next week..

Jekyll & Hyde and Rent are in production.

The Community Theatre landscape is bright and vibrant and I look forward to an amazing year of incredible theatre.

Wow Wayne, it appears its going to be an amazing year for theatre, what an exciting time to be in the Valley!

Community Theatre is an amazing gift to any community. It can cost several hundred dollars to go down below to see a production, and quality, local theatre productions are a huge asset anywhere.

I’d love to see local versions of Pippen, Hair, and the Producers! Can you tell we love musicals? I’m a bit sad we missed Urinetown. I’ve never seen it before, but from what I’ve heard, its hysterical.

I’m very excited about “Rent” coming to the Antelope Valley. Needless to say, it is a very challenging show, both for the vocal performances and the staging challenges. But more importantly, because it is thematically edgy – too much of what the local theatre community avoids in favor of “feel-good”, safe and reassuring productions.

Wait until the LBC gets to see “Angel”.
