There was a time when I admired Sarah Palin, until she started calling her opponents “socialist”, which I thought was strange, being that her state and it’s residents were direct beneficiaries of oil money extracted from corporations by the state.

No, this isn’t true “socialism” according to Guy’s Marxist lexicon, but it seems to directly benefit Sarah and her constituents and is a perfect replica of the Welfare State policies practised in Scandinavian nations like Norway and Sweden. And, to top that off, Alaska is the only U.S. state that is currently able to enjoy that type of Welfare State status. So, I thought it was extremely ignorant and politically stupid of her to make a remark like that and to attack “socialism” when she and her family are beneficiaries of it themselves.

I thought she was above that, but apparently…

Randy: “The United States is drowning in debt
Obama’s Big Government message is falling flat”

Oddly, the Right’s concern over our “national debt” seems to be borne out of pure politics and not anything substantial. If you cared so much about “debt”, why did support the war in Iraq?

If you cared so much about “big government”, why did you support an expansion of Medicaid and “No Child Left Behind” and the creation of a “Homeland Scurity Department”?

You see, “big government” is a set of buzzwords that Republicans conveniently trot out when they think they’ve got an audience, but the truth is, the GOP doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it comes to these accusations of “debt” and “big government”.

Richardson does have a proper pedigree to be a dem leader.

“A grand jury in New Mexico is currently investigating whether the financial services company CDR funneled more than $100,000 in campaign contributions to Richardson’s PAC in order to win state bond and construction finance projects. Several other financial firms and banks, including UBS, are also accused of contributing to the PAC in order to gain contracts.

Richardson’s office has been subpoenaed to hand over correspondence with the Democratic Governors’ Association, which received contributions from UBS during Richardson’s time as DGA chairman that alone total more than $400,000."

“…Coincidentally, the United States is in a two-year-long recession, and Obama and congressional Democrats intend on letting the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of the year. The outstanding public debt stands at $13.3 trillion. Any opposing viewpoints from Republicans or conservatives on cutting spending or addressing entitlement programs are met with media outrage, accusations of racism, and accusations that Republicans and conservatives are coldhearted people incapable of compassion or benevolence.

The Obama government’s actions ominously mirror the actions and the timing of the Argentinean government in early 2000, when the first of three tax increases was instituted. Higher unemployment, more debt, falling wages, and eventually inflation ensued. Moreover, the Obama administration and the mainstream media deceive the American people regarding the impact of the Bush tax cuts. Obama and the MSM repeatedly espouse that only tax rates for those rich Americans in the top income tax bracket will increase.

Unfortunately, the truth is that all tax brackets are impacted, and even the Obama lemmings will recognize they’ve been duped when their payroll tax deductions increase in 2011 and their take-home pay decreases. Perhaps then the lemmings will seriously consider what “hope and change” means and that elections do indeed have consequences. A summary of the Bush tax cuts expiring at the end of 2010:

10% bracket reverts to 15%
25% bracket reverts to 28%
28% bracket reverts to 31%
33% bracket reverts to 36%
35% bracket reverts to 39.6%
Marriage penalty is reinstituted
Child tax credit cut from $1,000 to $500 per child
Dependent care and adoption care credits cut
Estate (death) tax returns at a rate of 55% on estates over $1 million
15% capital gains tax reverts to 20%
15% dividends tax reverts to 39.6%
Many economists recognize, though they many not publicly admit it, that inflation is the only feasible alternative. The government is limited to three possible revenue sources: taxing, borrowing, and inflating. Any sensible person realizes the country cannot tax its way out of a $13-trillion debt or sustain existing entitlement programs, much less government-run health care. The government borrows money by selling government-backed securities to investors. Eventually, investors will either stop purchasing government securities or demand substantially higher interest rates due to the increased risk. The only feasible alternative is to monetize the debt — in other words, inflate it. Monty Pelerin’s recent American Thinker article captured the essence of the problem:

The political class’s survival is at stake. Eventually, anything that extends their rule will be tried. It is not concern for you or the economy that is driving policy, but the preservation of power of an increasingly wounded power elite. Their survival is now driving policy. Unfortunately, what benefits them is generally harmful for the economy.

Obama and congressional Democrats have chartered a course leading America down an Argentinean economic path. November may be the last reasonable chance to change course."

I keep hearing about “November” from people on the far-right who blog on this web site and others. They say how “November” is going to bring big changes to Congress and a GOP/Tea Party sweep.

I’m not convinced. Let’s take Nevada, our neighbour to the north and east, for example.

The radical right, embodied by the “Tea Party”, embedded themselves into the state’s Republican primary in order to defeat incumbent Sen. Harry Reid in November.

In Nevada, those who claim “Tea Party” affiliation are a loud but very small minority. The majority of Nevadans are union members and moderate Democrats or Republicans. In fact, the actual majority of registered voters in the state are Democrats. 70% of Nevada residents live in the Las Vegas region and Las Vegas votes very liberal in its core (think Shelley Berkley) and more moderate in outlying areas (think Dina Titus). Another important thing to keep in mind with regard to Nevada is that it is largely a retirement state with large numbers of retirees from states like New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts where they traditionally vote for liberal Democrats and these retirees have carried their politics with them. In addition, Nevada also has a large Hispanic population that now numbers around 25% of the state population.

Suffice to say, the Tea Party is a small minority in Nevada and not in any way reflective of the mainstream.

But since the Tea Party played a big role in the Nevada GOP Primary, their influence over that election was felt and, instead of a mainstream Republican candidate, the GOP primary voters picked Sharron Angle — the NV equivalent of Sherry Marquez — to run against Reid.

Sharron Angel is a proclaimed Southern Baptist. She believes in the criminalisation of abortion, she believes in ending state recognition of domestic partnerships, repeal anti-discrimination laws that protect gay men and lesbians, getting rid of the U.S. Department of Education, getting rid of Medicaid, ending Social Security, etc.

Nevada has been hit hard by the recession and currently suffers from chronic unemployment and, yet, Sharron Angle had the audacity to call unemployed Nevadans “lazy” when they called Reid’s office asking him to extend benefits.

Sharron Angle is going to go down in flames, and she should!

But the greater question is whether Republicans should be so arrogant as to assume that the voting public is going to drink the fermented Tea come November.

Getting rid of tax cuts for those making over $250,000 per year simply returns us to levels of the Clinton era when we actually created a budget surplus.

Some right-wing economists point to the current European tax cutting, conveniently forgetting that European taxes have been much higher than American. While they may have no choice but to cut taxes, what’s good for Europe is not necessarily good for America. Besides, who decided that those making $249,000 and below are middle-class? More likely, middle-class caps out at about $100,000.

This is fool’s math. The rich can and should pay more than they currently do (to say nothing of all the tax loopholes the rich enjoy).

The right-wingers have cynically gutted the middle-class, calling unions and guilds “special interests” when in fact they are the few remaining bulwarks against the complete destruction of the middle-class.

RAY: You and I see things differently. I see reducing taxes as a way to grow the economy. More taxes helps the government off the top, but does nothing to move the economy, ala the stimulus package.

If people have more money to spend, they will. The more money spent in an active economy will generate more taxes.
Every time a dollar moves, it will generate it’s share of tax revenue. If the government takes that dollar of the top of your pay check, it only becomes revenue once, when it is taxed.

The rich are most likely the people who generate jobs because they are business people.

As for the unions, the state and other government run unions have the “best” retirement contracts. Private sector retirements are well behind the government run unions. Bigger unions like the UAW do just fine, but need the active economy to ensure that new members will have benefits in the future.

Germany has modified its tax schedule and there is definate improvement in their economy. France uses nuclear energy with success, which is a conservative approach to energy, and it works and helps Frances economy.

As for the “right wingers” gutting the middle class, I don’t see it. The middle class is far more at an economic risk under Obama and all of his “great” plans for socializing our country. Obama says no new taxes, but when all of these new plans of his kick in, paying for healthcare will the first big new tax he will put on the middle class.

Keeping the market free will generate jobs. Lower taxes, making it economical for companies wanting to do business here in the USA rather than overseas will bring jobs back here.

Get your facts straight on the unions. Most are left run, and most of the others are run by the government.

Have you ever noticed the left plays both sides of the fence. First, Clinton had the strongest economy ever, but the last two years, the economy under Clinton was in the tank, Bush gets blamed. Bush turns the economy around after inheriting Clinton’s. Bush turned the economy around even after the ‘911’ attacks, and gets no credit from the left.

When Obama became president, the state of the economy was and still is Bush’s fault. However, Bush inheriting Clinton’s poor economy is never mentioned.

Atlas Shrugged fiction to fact in 51 years.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123146363567166677.html

“For the uninitiated, the moral of the story is simply this: Politicians invariably respond to crises — that in most cases they themselves created — by spawning new government programs, laws and regulations. These, in turn, generate more havoc and poverty, which inspires the politicians to create more programs . . . and the downward spiral repeats itself until the productive sectors of the economy collapse under the collective weight of taxes and other burdens imposed in the name of fairness, equality and do-goodism.

In the book, these relentless wealth redistributionists and their programs are disparaged as “the looters and their laws.” Every new act of government futility and stupidity carries with it a benevolent-sounding title. These include the “Anti-Greed Act” to redistribute income (sounds like Charlie Rangel’s promises soak-the-rich tax bill) and the “Equalization of Opportunity Act” to prevent people from starting more than one business (to give other people a chance). My personal favorite, the “Anti Dog-Eat-Dog Act,” aims to restrict cut-throat competition between firms and thus slow the wave of business bankruptcies. Why didn’t Hank Paulson think of that?"

“President Obama missed his opportunity early last year to rally the public behind a call for shared sacrifice and a great national mission to rebuild the United States in a way that would create employment for millions and establish a gleaming new industrial platform for the great advances of the 21st century.

It would have taken fire and imagination, but the public was poised to respond to bold leadership. If the Republicans had balked, and they would have, the president had the option of taking his case to the people, as Truman did in his great underdog campaign of 1948.

During the Depression, Franklin Roosevelt explained to the public the difference between wasteful spending and sound government investments. “You cannot borrow your way out of debt,” he said, “but you can invest your way into a sounder future.”

Now, with so much money already spent and Republicans expected to gain seats in the Congressional elections, the president finds himself with a much weaker hand, even if he were inclined to play it boldly.

What that will mean in the real world of ordinary Americans is that even if there is a fretful recovery from the Great Recession, millions will be left out of it. Hope has morphed into widespread gloom as widespread economic suffering becomes the new normal in America."

“So, given the scope of this environmental and health hazard, occurring on a fairly regular basis, how do the Obama administration and the city and state Democratic machine choose to utilize Wisconsin’s allotment of borrowed federal funds?

On a “high-speed” rail link between Milwaukee and Madison, of course.

Madison is located roughly 80 miles due west of Milwaukee and is easily accessed via Interstate 94. Outside the city, the speed limit is 65 mph, and barring construction or an accident, the drive is easy. Bus service is also available between the two cities and the major communities in between. A rail link was abandoned decades ago for want of ridership.

Despite the fact that a majority of the public is against the project, Governor Jim Doyle (D) and the Obama administration insist on proceeding. Stating that the project would create “more than 5,500 construction and engineering jobs,” Doyle immediately went abroad and arranged for the purchase of the locomotives and cars in Spain. The Spanish company has committed to renovating an old plant in Milwaukee for some of the work, but the bulk of the work, and the profits, will go to Spain. Obviously, the jobs created would evaporate once the work is done, and the taxpayers would be left with ongoing operating and maintenance costs for a railroad that few will use. Like Amtrak, which runs regular service between Milwaukee and Chicago as well as to Minneapolis/St. Paul, every ride would have to be heavily subsidized."

Since the poop from Milwaukee goes into Lake Michigan the rail road would be from them to poop in Madison.

“…In this new system, the government will continue to raid the private sector for money to hire more federal workers and to support its union base. And businesses, rather than invest their $1.8 trillion in idle cash to hire workers, will continue to cut jobs.

Already, government is where the action is. Since the recession began, federal employment has jumped 10%. Private sector employment has fallen 6.8%. As USA Today recently reported, government workers in 2009 earned $123,049 in pay and benefits, twice the $61,051 earned in the private sector.

This Keynes-on-steroids model has been tried before, in Europe. It didn’t work. It led to permanently high levels of joblessness — what economists call structural unemployment.

A recent peer-reviewed study in Sweden found that for every 100 new jobs government creates, 114 are destroyed in the private sector. Similarly, a French study of data from OECD countries from 1960 to 2000 discovered, on average, “creation of 100 public jobs may have eliminated about 150 private sector jobs.”

In short, it was a disaster that the U.S. is now duplicating. The next Congress should have no greater priority than reversing it all."

Actually, I think Randy’s idea would probably boost the economy right out of recession within about 3 months.

The problem is, City funding comes from sales tax revenue. If we cut sales tax, there goes City funding. If City funding goes, there goes Frank Visco’s gravy train of Redevelopment funds.

“It’s sad, but the economy makes presidents seem like geniuses or clowns more than it should.  I think FDR basically did a good job with the banking system, but the fact remains that after 3 years of recession, the economy had probably bottomed out; if Herbert Hoover had taken office in 1930 instead of 1928, he might well have gone down in history as a great president.  Carter, too, got painted as an economic clown, even though he started the deregulation and liberalization that Reagan finished. Unfortunately, he also presided over an ugly, ugly recession induced by Paul Volcker’s war on inflation.

Conversely, Bill Clinton may have done many good things, but he didn’t make any meaningful contribution to the tech bubble, which drove the economy, and especially tax revenues, to soaring heights."

AvSkyEye: "I think enough Americans know that, reasonably, Obama and Democrats have done a thousand times better at governing than Republicans.

Right, Republicans don’t know how to govern, they just know how to spend $$ & raise deficits.

Avskyeye:“… Sure, it still smells like shit in here, because we can’t clean the Republican shit off the walls fast enough. But it’s Republican shit.”

And here all the Obama’s thought they’d have to do is change all the toilet seats in the White House after Bush left! Time for some x-tra strength Lysol®

AVskyeye: “You really don’t need us. Unless maybe one among us is an exorcist.”

LOL
