Knight on Fleeing ex-cons
AV Press reports today that Steve Knight “wants to enhance the penalty for ex-convicts who run from law enforcement.” Knight would prosecute a felon who evades law enforcement in the same way as a felon who possesses a firearm, adding a mandatory one-year sentence on top of any other punishment imposed.
The same article discusses the Democrat plan to modify the current voter-approved three strikes law to limit the third strike to “serious or violent felony” rather than just any felony.
Apparently, the feeling is that the Demos have the votes to pass the three strikes downgrade bill, and since fleeing cops is such a popular activity with criminals, upgrading that to a serious felony which would still trigger a third-strike sentence would put more teeth in the law. And maybe discourage these car, bicycle & foot chases that often end badly.
Three-strikes has come under a lot of fire when applied to relatively minor felony offenses like robbery without use of firearm, with critics saying that is is unfair to sentence someone to 25 years for “stealing a pizza” or some such. However this is a red herring since the enhanced sentence is not actually for stealing a pizza, it is for being a career felon.
Of course, it certainly costs a lot of money to keep these people locked up, so maybe the “hate government spending” conservatives will join with the “love our downtrodden criminals” liberals in opposing this one.

It would not deter a parolee or ex-con from running, but it would be a great enhancement in sentencing. Adding 5 years or whatever the proposed law is, would be nice. Keeping crooks in jail is the right idea.
I approve of his bill!

I agree. I also agree with Ray in that the punishment should fit the crime. I do feel that the third strike should involve a felony, (have a victim) not a minor offense (like stealing a candy-bar from the store)I think the courts should have some leeway in imposing that 3rd strike.

So, what’s the National interpretation of a “felony” – and if a person is convicted of “a felony”, do the cops have the right to shoot them in the back 8 times or more if they flee? Do they have to have 2 strikes pending, and does running away (knowledgeable to the cop shooting of the other 2-strikes) count as the 3rd and justified in death?
Recently, this judgement went down:
American kids denied food stamps in Alabama under immigration law
“The law makes it a felony for a government employee to engage in “business transactions” with illegal immigrants, which some government employees have interpreted very broadly.
IIllegal immigrants have been told they can’t pay their utility bills* or even their taxes because it would count as a “transaction” with the government, according to Cohen.

According to this story, it’s a felony for illegals to pay their utility bills, as they are making a transaction ‘with the government’. I didn’t know that our gas, electric and phone bills were ‘government payments’. But, according to Alabama, they are.
Looks like the word ‘felon’ needs a new definition, imho.

Roxi I am happy you addressed that the state of Alabama passed a law preventing illegal aliens and their anchor babie from collecting welfare and other social services, but this is utrue. Anchor babies are entitled to get benefits.
Illegal aliens whole justifcation for being in the USA is that they are doing jobs americans won’t do (another myth by MSMedia and the pro-immigration groups).
First stop why are we rewarding individuals for breaking the law and providing an incentive for millions more to come to the land of the handouts.
We give foreign aid to Mexico and they should use it to help their citizens instead of lining their pockets.
States like Arizona, Georgia, Oklahoma and Alabama just to name a few states that has enacted laws preventing illegal aliens from being a burden on resources meant to help americans. Virtually every state is feeling the effects of illegal immigration. California spends 22.6 billion dollars every year on providing social services to illegal and legal aliens. This is sucide for any nation and we aren’t alone in the world, other nations while condemning america has enacted immigration laws.
People have woken to the fact that jobs and resources are being wasted on parasites.
The EDL (English Defense League) is fighting the huge amount of Islamics who take over their neighborhoods, schools and jobs, not to mention placing a burden on healthcare. Sound familar? In Germany there is a rise in Neo-Nazism and the issue is again jons and immigrants.
No matter what liberal MSMedia has to say those affected know that their jobs are in danger, their schools are full to bursting with the flood of immigrants children and people are fed up to here and is fighting for survival.
But Roxi I don’t think your being very honest with your statements. I am condemned for my statements regarding marsh, but at least I am stating facts and not lies.

In between the “oh, I never would criticize a criminal because they are after all so composed of the downtrodden” and “hey, shoot ’em in the back” there is a huge expanse of choice.
My personal feeling is that running from the cops creates a clear and present danger not only to the runner but the cops and the surrounding general public. And like it or not, the onus of choice is on the runner, not the cops, the general public or anyone else. This being the case I would prefer fleeing the law being made a more serious offense than it is now. Generally the “flight” charge gets barganed away by the time the miscreant is finally sentenced for something.
Of course I can put on my Grumpy old man hat and note that there is an element of Darwinism in getting killed at the end of a chase. (Slap! NO! BAD Grumpy)

Bad Grumpy!
But you’re right. The minute you make the decision to run, then you should know that you risk getting shot. These jokers know the cops have guns.
Those who defend the criminals and always side with them against the cops, follow them on the street sometimes. See what it’s like on the street! See what they’re up against.
Even in King Rex’s safe city, it’s dangerous out there after dark.

AVTC I did just that, when I was taking Admin. of Justice 101 I rode along with the LASD. It is dangerous no matter what city you live in the AV. With the section 8 people from South Central etc, and illegal aliens there is a good chance at one time or another you will be a victim of crime.
