Here we go again...
Tonight’s city council meeting was interesting to say the least. Short agenda, all the controversy came as one entered the meeting and during public comment.
It appears as if Sherry Marquez has stepped in it big time. In response to a news article on a domestic violence killing in New York she posted the following on her Facebook page-
“Sherry Marquez- This is what the Muslim religion is all about- the beheadings, honor killings are just the beginning of what is to come in the USA. We are told that this is a small majority of Muslim’s in America, but it is truly what they are all about. And they are one of the fastest growing religions in USA. You disrespect/dishonor them or their religion and you should die (they don’t even blink at killing their own wives/daughters, because they are justified by their religion). This is going to become more and more normal. http://www.rr.com/news/topic/article/rr/1110/10118494/NY_man_accused_of_beheading_claims_he_was_battered
Notice his defense- he will pursue a defense combining that justification as well as psychiatric claims. Just a hint of what is to come… I know, hard to believe.
Ok, so she posted a really, really, unbelievably stupid post to Facebook, she should just deal with it and move on, right?? Not so fast! This is Lancaster, remember?
So, as you walked into the council meeting tonight, you were greeted by security, even ridiculous by Lancaster standards. They had the normal guy at the door to peek in purses, except tonight he was digging through them as if expecting a 3 foot sword in a 12 inch bag. Then there were the 2 or 3 guys in the lobby that looked like plain clothes officers checking everyone out. Ok, you might think, paranoia runs rampant in Lancaster, this is just Rex doing what he must to feel secure.
Then, as you entered the building, it quickly became apparent that there were almost as many cops in the room as there were citizens. Who is paying for that?? There was a row of folks from the Islamic center sitting in the back, and behind them, standing against the wall, several police officers making sure that they knew they were being watched.
As public comment opened, Ms. Marquez made a statement. Did she apologize to her Muslim constituents? Of course NOT! She apologized to her fellow council members for being the cause of all the fuss, but seemed completely unconcerned for the members of this community she had slandered.
So, not only did Ms. Marquez do a very foolish thing, the city itself seemed determined to send the message that these community members were violent and dangerous.
Oh, it goes further- When Ms. Marquez facebook post became public knowledge, someone actually contacted her to express concern about the message she was sending, and she actually took that very nice and civil exchange and called the commander of the sheriff’s station to say that she felt threatened. Not sure when it became appropriate for a council member to use the commander of the sheriff’s station as her personal paranoia patrol, but it appears to be the case in Lancaster.

when did lancaster get taken over by a bunch of religious fanatics?
why did we elect such a dumbass?
why would we elect someone who can’t

someone who majored in “i’ll ask my husband, 101”?
and what of the christians killing there

SEPARATE OUR TOWN FROM THIS FANATIC’S

2500 Lancaster “Churcher” voters, if they hear of Marquez’s actions/comments, would say “So what?”.
And the more confused/frustrated/angry normal, thinking, reasonable people got about it….the better the churchers feel about themselves. Because pissing off people “not like them” gives them a doing-God’s-work high (which, in reality, is a feed-their-hatred/bigotries/fears rush, renamed).

Many Muslims on the other hand do, and they make it loud and clear. They want Christians dead.

lanc,
Most of the hatred is Muslim on non Muslim. Show me a clip similiar to the vid I posted where Christians want to destroy Islam. I could post a hundred seperate sources of Muslims On Chritian hatred and death threats for every one you post. You can’t even find one.
marino says...
.“Muslim protests call for beheadings in the civilized U.K.”
“Non-Muslim Burned Alive & Mutilated by Islamic…”
“Muslim mobs screaming for the beheading of three Christian women in Indonesia.”
You can’t compare or even get close to this.

Marino, there are jerks and idiots in every religion, every culture, and every nationality.
The important distinction here is culture versus religion. The culture of some Islamic countries allow, or even condone, such acts of barbarism but the Muslim religion does not.
Haven’t we gotten past the habit of painting everyone with the same brush? Perhaps not.

PK,
There are jerks in every religion. No shit. But lets cut out the politics for a minute. I won’t ever run for council or mayor or janitor here so I’ll speak my mind unlike most politicians.
There are more outspoken Muslims that want to behead you than there are Christians they want to destroy Islam. It’s all there. I could post dozens of of clip and sources of Mulsims in London and around the globe that make clear they want non-Muslims exterminated.
There is no comparison. And not nearly enough decent Muslims speak out against the high percentage (compared to Christians) os Mulsims that want to destroy, behead, and murder, non-Muslims, and Muslims for that matter.
Feels good not being a politician. I didn’t lose any votes.

Denise says ‘My guess is that if you tracked the “religion” of all domestic violence killings in the US, the vast, overwhelming majority of them are committed by people who would self-identify as being Christian.’ Well, of course the majority would be ‘christian’. The US considers it a ‘christian’ nation. Whether thease people are or not. So the percentages play in favor of your thesis.
I am not an ’LBC’r’ or ‘churcher’ yet the animosity shown by Lancaster, and others, towards people of faith is quite repulsive.
Your religious and/political beliefs are your own. I shall respect them and question you for enlightenment. Yet I find the closed-mindedness of many opiners reprehensible!

Denise_Latanzi says...
You know, one could point out that putting bible verses on military weapons was sending the message that we, the US, are also killing in the name of God.
Just like there are people, like Ms. Marquez, who do believe that Muslim’s simply deserve to be bombed for their religion. People who suggested that we should just “nuke” the whole middle east after we were attacked, for the sake of course of killing “fanatics”.
The truth is that every religion has fanatics. From the nuts that think its ok to shoot abortion providers because its “justified by God”, to the mass murderers of 9/11. To say that one has more then the other is to ignore the dark ages, the salem witch trials, and even the fact that groups like the KKK have often claimed to be Christian organizations.
Even Buddhists, probably one of the most peaceful religions on earth, as fanatics who will set themselves on fire as some sort of statement to protest things they don’t like.
The case in New York was a Domestic Violence case, and just like a lot of women murdered by husbands, it was done because the husband felt he was losing control of her. It happens in this country every single day, but this one made the news because the husband was Muslim.
I know a lot of people that practice the Muslim faith as devoutly as any Christian I have ever met. They love their wives, their children, their neighbors, the same way we Christians are supposed to love ours. Not once have I ever felt that I was being judged around them because of my faith, and I can not imagine what its like to take your spouse and children into a public meeting and be treated like a criminal simply because of your faith.
PK, I don’t know if they patted down the men because I was 20 minutes late getting there. I do know they were quite thorough in inspecting my tiny little purse, which is barely big enough to hold my wallet and keys, and when I asked one of the Muslim women, she said they searched her bag like they were sure she was carrying a bomb inside. I’m surprised they didn’t have dogs there.
It always pisses me off- These boneheads don’t seem to realize how invasive it is to a woman to have some idiot pawing through her bag.
Can you imagine what would have happened had they discovered a “feminine hygiene product”? They probably would have evacuated the building and called in the bomb squad.

Actually Marino, that is exactly what she is. Such a coward in fact that the idea that some people don’t share her faith scares the living daylights out of her.
Such a coward that when contacted about her post on facebook, she treated the COMMANDER of the local Sheriff’s department like her personal servant.
It’s a weak, weak person who is afraid of things they don’t understand, or who will spread the kind of viciousness she spread toward her neighbors, and worse, her constituents.
If you want to hold bigoted beliefs, thats fine. You’re not elected to anything, you don’t serve the public interest. You can be as scared as you want of “those people”. You can even move to Lancaster and vote for her in 2 years.

Maybe Marino, you just simply need to get out and meet a couple of the amazing Muslim families right here in our community.
Now, I haven’t checked this, but someone told me today that 20% or more of local physicians are Muslim. I have 2 doctors who are, my primary care doctor and my orthopedic surgeon. I highly doubt either of them are prone to fanaticism.
Sometimes just getting to know what you fear shows you that fear itself just because something isn’t familiar to you is kind of silly.
Trying to paint all the people in the world that practice the the religion of Islam is in fact bigoted. If you can justify insane public scrutiny of law abiding citizens, then I’m sure justification of public flogging of them because they don’t share your faith can’t be that far behind.
Marquez did not “speak out”, she simply forgot that the Facebook is public and everyone in the world could see what she was saying. She thought she was preaching to the choir, because she has posted other, equally inflammatory things and no one has called her out on it. She deleted this posting as soon as she became aware that other people could see it. The great thing about computers though is that sometimes, you just can’t erase things faster than people can screen shot them.

As I was on my way to the ribbon cutting of the Army National Guard
Readiness Center last Friday morning, I started thinking and praying
about those families of the Fort Hood victims that had their loved ones
(sons and
daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers) taken from them in
what
I see as a tragic and avoidable act of terrorism.
I thought about my experiences as a dependent military child, wife and
mother; living on military installations were the safest places on
earth. I began to think about how it could have been my son, who serves
in the Air Force; what if this attack had happened on an Air Base? What
if he had been preparing to deploy or returning home? Again, I began to
pray for the families of our dead and our wounded. They died in what
should be the
safest place on earth, a US military installation, at the hands of a
madman
filled with hate for America and all it stands for.
The asinine political correctness of the day has wiped out all common
sense.
Under the ruse of religious freedom, allowing those with Jihad in their
hearts to embed themselves with those they hate and are just waiting for
the
right time to attack. This has got to stop!
Unfortunately, these attacks will continue and increase until all see
the Jihadists for what they are: terrorists.
American’s please speak out and speak out now. Call or write your
congressman, call or write the president and express your outrage. Our
troops, that come home from harms way only to find the enemy still
within
has got to stop! Our troops deserve to be safe at home!
God bless our troops, God bless our Veterans – and may God bless
America!
Sincerely,
Sherry Marquez
MY RESPONSE: How does Mayor Rex feel about Sherry’s comments? Inquiring minds would like to know. What a council staff threesome:
Truly as Harding Republican eloquently stated: The SLATE OF HATE

Is Sherry this passionate about starving kids in Haiti, skin heads, possible corruption in Lancaster that impacts the quality of life of residents by re-routing taxpayer dollars …. of is it just Muslims.
I don’t think she apologized to the people last night, her constituents, etc. I thought it would be nice if Mayor Rex had of done that and not looked like he was in suspended animation or a coma.
Geeze, between the black minister who got excoriated by Mayor Parris and Sherry’s comments, minorities aren’t fairing very well in Lancaster.
And I thought the Mayor’s attack on the black minister took the cake. Go Sherry!

Harding,
How many have the KKK killed/beheaded lately? Very poor comparison. Try again.
why oh why, would hanging from a tree, gurgling and kicking not be worth comparing to being beheaded and kicking and gurgling.
or being burned out. or being hunted through the woods??
and marino, u state ur an american 1st.
and u seem to think i ‘m not, and don’t “pull my own wait”?
u take the easy way and think ur working HARD at being PATRIOTIC.
I THINK IT MUCH HARDER, AND MUCH MORE PATRIOTIC TO FIGHT TO FIX WHATS WRONG WITH MY COUNTRY.
not wear blinders, and pretend we’re RIGHT. whether we are or not.
u keep talking of video, and conveniently
choose to forget we have pictures, WE CAN’T RELEASE, because they are so incendiary!
so yeah, hate to see u lie to urself.

Harding Republican says...
Is he trying to say that the KKK is a kinder, gentler organization now? May be.
I guess since they haven’t lynched anybody recently that they’ve cleaned up their act. Those lynchings do take a toll on your public relations image.

dbeardw says...
What do you call recently? And is lynching just about hanging you from a tree or does dragging you down a Texas road count, does sticking a plunger up your rectum count as in the New York incident, does planting drugs or a gun on you count, or hiding evidence from the defense so you stay in jail most of your life and get out because of DNA count?
Hasn’t the KKK simply become more sophisticated in its way of hanging people.

Reminds me of the article in the VPress awhile back titled “Antelope Valley had ties to Aryan Nations”. I would imagine that an elected official would have better sense than to publicly post inflammatory comments on a public site such as Facebook. Apparently emotions were paramount over the thought process. Citizens have the right to free speech but when you are representing that citizenry perhaps one should stop, think, and take a deep breath before hitting the send button. This would be advantageous to any group, be it Christian, Muslim, Jewish, et al.

Let’s clear up some bad information here- While the Valley Press and Ms. Marquez herself referred to the crime in question as happening last week, it in fact took place in 2008. The fact that Ms. Marquez just heard about it does not make it more recent.
Second- Since that crime and contrary to Ms. Marquez fears, there has been no rash of “honor killings or beheadings” in the US, in fact, that one stands alone as a horrific example of Domestic Violence of a man toward his estranged wife. In 2008, when this crime took place, almost 1200 women were killed by their husbands or boyfriends. Of those close to 1200, 1 killing was by a Muslim… hmmm, maybe there is something off about Ms. Marquez’s post.
Third- Of Demographic groups in the US, Arab-Americans, including Muslims, are right down there with Asian population as the least likely to be involved in criminal activity. Worse, these days, they are the MOST LIKELY to be victims of hate crimes.
Fourth- Just like Asian-Americans, Arab Americans have higher than average incomes, are more likely to send their kids to college, and strangely enough considering the local Republican Parties view of them, more likely to be political conservatives.
To sum it all up, with the exception of the “political conservative” (haha), they are way more likely than almost any other ethnic group in the US to be good citizens, productive and successful citizens.
For the record- All of the crime statistics came from the DOJ, the rest from the US census and several demographic ethnic study reports.
So yes, Ms. Marquez comments were ignorant, racist and wrong.

I don’t believe one has to be a Democrat, Republican, or Independent to see that Ms. Marquez is not the brightest tool in the box. Unfortunately, she now is on the news as a representative of a city that already has a reputation of being, shall we say, less than upscale. The fact that her supporters do not see this as an elected official that made damaging remarks but only as a Christian standing up for her beliefs only heightens my belief that this city is truly in trouble. I do not live in L.A. County but did at one time in La Crescenta and Montrose area, as well as Toluca Lake. I grew up in La Crescenta which is a rather small town but I was never embarassed to say where I was from, in fact I was and am proud. This is a first for us to live in an area that is more than close minded.

It’s been Lancaster’s problems for decades. The “powerbrokers” say a few right words to keep the churchers coming out to vote for them. It doesn’t really take much…just get the churchers blood up with some nonsense social nonissues which have little to do with good governance. (This year it’s “Christian city”, council prayer, Muslim peril, eye-in-the-sky, et al)
The powerbrokers then get a free ride in power to continue buying and selling Lancaster to their inner circle. And they never have to defend themselves on the real issues, because churchers are focused on their ridiculous nonissues only.
As long as the powerbrokers are paying homage to churchers with the right empty words, then they get easy tickets back to city hall.
Meanwhile, citizens who care about real issues and genuine good public policy are left to the (relegated to bit part) task of debating real issues amongst themselves.
Rinse and repeat.

Thank you for explaining this. I have a Facebook page but as a private citizen I would not post defamatory comments just out of respect to my family and friends on my site who would have to look at this. I believe in standing up for our beliefs as much as the next person does, but when one takes the oath of an office to represent ALL citizens of a community does that mean only the people that agree with you at all times? I guess that would be the scenario.
Thank you again for the response.

The churcher campaign formula only works when there is pathetically low voter turnout, which there always is.
That’s why Lancaster moved their election to an off MONTH (April), not just off year, date. They want as few as possible normal, working, (busy) citizens to come out. Leaving the powerbrokers’ only campaign challenge of saying the right things (and prompting the right congregations) to get churchers out to vote.
Tried and true. Been working for years. They’ve got the numbers.
Never forget. Lancaster has “In God We Trust” on their wall, and Christ’s cross on their city logo (two previous bones thrown to the churchers).
It’s positively clear!

Oh, and one might ask her about 2 local incidents from a short while back. The first, a local man and I believe a member of LBC killed his wife and children in Palmdale in a murder/Suicide. Shortly after that another local Christian man and member of a different local church shot his estranged wife or girlfriend at a little league game in front of her son and his entire little league team.
Now, the killing in New York and the killings here in our community were all brutal, completely senseless, and outright evil domestic violence killings. My guess is that if you tracked the “religion” of all domestic violence killings in the US, the vast, overwhelming majority of them are committed by people who would self-identify as being Christian. Does that mean that all Christains are violent wife killers? No.
The Bible in the old testament actually justifies the killing by stoning of women (the Koran does not), does that mean that Christian men who kills their wives are justified by religion? of course NOT!
Several years ago, Ed Sileo forwarded out a joke that was stupid and not something a public official should do. He immediately apologized. Ms. Marquez has not only not apologized, but she literally continues to slap the Muslim community in the AV in the face. The city itself is sending exactly the same message to the population as Marquez did in her post by treating the Muslim Community as if they were outlaw bikers, thugs and criminals.
I’m be surprised, but nothing here surprises me anymore……
