MICHELE BACHMAN – HYPOCRITE EXTRAORDINAIRE!
December 22, 2009
*Teabagger Queen Michele Bachmann Cashed In On $250,000 In Welfare
*
By Yasha Levine
Michele Bachmann has become known as the Queen of the anti-government Tea Baggers, protesting health care reform and slamming every other government handout as “socialism.” But what her followers don’t know is that Rep. Bachmann is also a queen of another kind—a welfare queen. That’s right, the anti-government insurrectionist has taken more than a quarter-million dollars in government handouts thanks to corrupt farming subsidies she has been collecting for at least a decade.
And she’s not the only one who has been padding her bank account with taxpayer money.
Bachmann, of Minnesota, has spent much of this year agitating against health care reform, whipping up the tea-baggers with stories of death panels and rationed health care. She has called for a revolution against what she sees as Barack Obama’s attempted socialist takeover of America, saying presidential policy is “reaching down the throat and ripping the guts out of freedom.”
But data compiled from federal records by Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit watchdog that tracks the recipients of agricultural subsidies in the United States, shows that Bachmann has an inner Marxist that is perfectly at ease with living on the government dole. According to the organization’s records, Bachmann’s family farm received $251,973 in federal subsidies between 1995 and 2006. The farm had been managed by Bachmann’s recently deceased father-in-law and took in roughly $20,000 in 2006 and $28,000 in 2005, with the bulk of the subsidies going to dairy and corn. Both dairy and corn are heavily subsidized—or “socialized”—businesses in America (in 2005 alone, Washington spent $4.8 billion propping up corn prices) and are subject to strict government price controls. These subsidies are at the heart of America’s bizarre planned agricultural economy and as far away from Michele Bachmann’s free-market dream world as Cuba’s free medical system. If American farms such as hers were forced to compete in the global free market, they would collapse.
However, Bachmann doesn’t think other Americans should benefit from such protection and assistance. She voted against every foreclosure relief bill aimed at helping average homeowners (despite the fact that her district had the highest foreclosure rate in Minnesota), saying that bailing out homeowners would be “rewarding the irresponsible while punishing those who have been playing by the rules.” That’s right, the subsidy queen wants the rest of us to be responsible.
Bachmann’s financial disclosure forms indicate that her personal stake in the family farm is worth up to $250,000. They also show that she has been earning income from the farm business, and that the income grew in just a few years from $2,000 to as much as $50,000 for 2008. This has provided her with a second government-subsidized income to go with her job as a government-paid congresswoman who makes $174,000 per year (in addition to having top-notch government medical benefits). “If she has an interest in a farm getting federal subsidy payments, she is benefiting from them,” Sandra Schubert, director of government affairs for the Environmental Working Group, told Gannett News Service in 2007, when the subsidies to Bachmann were first publicly disclosed.
But Bachmann isn’t the only welfare recipient on Capitol Hill. As it turns out, there is a filthy-rich class of absentee farmers—both in and out of Congress—who demand free-market rules by day and collect their government welfare checks in the mail at night, payments that subsidize businesses that otherwise would fail. Over the past couple of decades, welfare for the super-wealthy seems to be the only kind of welfare our society tolerates.
In the 11 years for which the Environmental Working Group has compiled data, the federal government paid out a total of $178 billion to American farmers. We’re not talking about the Joads here. The bulk of subsidies go to the wealthy, not small farmers, as Ken Cook, the group’s president, explained to the Central Valley (Calif.) Business Times:
American taxpayers have been writing farm subsidy checks to wealthy absentee land owners, state prison systems, universities, public corporations, and very large, well-heeled farm business operations without the government so much as asking the beneficiaries if they need our money. … Even if you live smack in the middle of a big city, type in a ZIP code and you’ll find farm subsidy recipients.
Chuck Grassley, the longtime Republican senator from Iowa who warns his constituents of Obama’s “trend toward socialism,” has seen his family collect $1 million in federal handouts over an 11-year period, with Grassley’s son receiving $699,248 and the senator himself pocketing $238,974. Even Grassley’s grandson is learning to ride through life on training wheels, snagging $5,964 in 2005 and $2,363 in 2006. In the Grassley family they learn early how to enjoy other people’s money.
Sen. Grassley railed against government intervention in the health care market, telling The Washington Times, “Whenever the government does more … that’s a movement toward socialism.” As the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, he ought to know, especially because the government has done more for him and his kin than for Americans struggling with high medical bills and mortgages. Even the free-market think tank the Heritage Foundation criticized Grassley on his deep connections to farming interests and his stubborn lack of transparency.
Then there’s Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., whose family has been on the government take for at least the past 11 years, pocketing some $500,000. The senator recently held a “prayercast” with Michele Bachmann to beseech God to kill health care reform as soon as possible because it would bring an evil socialist spirit into America. Like Bachmann, Brownback has a fierce belief in God, the free market and a two-year limit on all welfare benefits—unless it’s welfare to rich Republicans who don’t need it.
Not surprisingly, Blue Dog Democrats are on board with this welfare-for-the-rich thing. Max Baucus, the fiscally conservative Democratic senator from Montana who did his best to sabotage the health care reform process before it ever began, collected $250,000 in taxpayer subsidies to his family’s farm while fighting to keep Americans at the mercy of free-market health insurance. Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, another Democrat, also helped hold the line against so-called socialized medicine for Americans who need assistance, even though her family farm business follows the socialized subsidy playbook to a T. The Lincolns pocketed $715,000 in farm subsidies over a 10-year period, and the senator even admitted to using $10,000 of it as petty cash in 2007. Democratic Rep. Stephanie Sandlin of South Dakota stayed true to her conservative free-market roots by voting against the public option. Meanwhile, her daddy, Lars Herseth, a former South Dakota legislator, collected a welfare jackpot of $844,725 paid out between 1995 and 2006.
That’s just the way the game is played these days. Republicans and conservative Democrats bitch and moan about the allegedly Marxist underpinnings of universal health care and do everything they can to deny struggling Americans access to social services. Meanwhile, many of them profit off taxpayers in a massive welfare program.
Farm subsidies have become so corrupt that payments sometimes go to dead people for years. Federal farm subsidies, which were originally meant to help struggling farmers survive, are now little more than taxpayer robbery, taking taxpayer wealth from working Americans and sending it to the have-mores. According to 11 years’ worth of Environmental Working Group data that tracks $200 billion in subsidies, the wealthiest 10 percent of “farmers” have collected 75 percent of the money. That’s exactly the kind of socialism that Rep. Bachmann and her elite ilk like.

So what?
All my neighbors get farm subsidies too.
They can’t make a living or pay their taxes without them.
Farmers are a part of the entrenched big government welfare class, and that’s the way Washington likes it and wants to keep it.
Interference in farming by the federal government is almost the sole reason America’s economically viable family farms are a thing of the past.
Where do you think food comes from anyway? Do you have any idea what it really costs to produce a gallon of milk, a bushel of wheat or a lamb chop? Do you know the costs of a tractor tire, boom spray nozzle or 250 gallon stock tank?
How are farmers supposed to live and keep farming with milk at $15.80 at hundred weight?
Corn at $3.15 a bushel, wheat $4.14 a bushel and hogs at $63?
Oh..did I forget to mention that farmers get a special screwing from the IRS tax code?
Fact of the matter is, the USDA, lobbyists, and global special interest groups have shafted American farmers with the help of Congress & the White House for over 100 years.
Farm subsidies are one of many the reasons there’s “factory farms”, high fructose corn syrup in everything and you get to buy really cheap food.
Food prices haven’t been an election issue since Richard Nixon and Washington plans on keeping it that way.
So Rep. Bachmann’s family’s farm gets a subsidy – big deal.
Would you’d rather see her family farm sold for taxes or turned into a strip mall?
The only way change will come to American farms and agricultural is to abandon the big government, fake left/right paradigm, and return farms to farmers and to a Free Market.
With a free market farm subsidies will be a thing of the past.

Agriculture is one of the biggest scams in the U.S. People buy a small parcel of land and grow corn on it so they can get government money. They do it all of the time in Nebraska, where my Mom has family. And most of them are Republicans, or claim to be. If Michele Bachmann wants people to take her seriously, then she needs to return that $48,000 to Washington and she needs to go after the people who abuse farm subsidies also, not just spout off about “socialism” when it goes to help people struggling in urban areas. Then maybe, she would get more respect!

If fact, all federal giveaways should be abolished. Because you can identify a hypocrite on the side you are against is not a valid argument for your position. How about we give liberty a try? Wrong! The government didn’t destroy farming! Wealthy farmers, through global trade, saw an opportunity to take a New Deal programme (meant to help them, at the time) and re-mold it to suite their lustful greediness. They lobbied the government for continued intervention and changes to accomodate them. They use the global market to try and justify having the government continue to subsidise them. So, quit with this knee-jerk blaming of the government. There are people behind it, like Bachmann!

Matt is right. It’s the Corporate Farms that have destroyed the small, independent family farms. I and others who care have been watching it for decades, donating cash to Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid – only to see one after one small, family farms go under after another.
Latest reason for cattlemen to sell their herds is the “drought”! Whether imagined or real – it’s become more profitable for the US to buy meat for consumers from a foreign country. Otherwise, US meat you buy is full of hormones, brought to you by the Corporate Masters: Dow Chemical.
Corp’s buy up the land, grow Monsanto seed and infect other farms. Then they sue the farmers for ‘growing their copyright seed’ and put them out of biz.
Those who do not remember small farms closing across this country during the 80’s and 90’s are dumb fucks and should be put to pasture with the rest of the hormone induced herd.
The fact that Michelle Bachman is cashing in on this deal with Ag. is quite enlightening!

Holy Crap, There is some good blogging going on here. This post turned into one of those Conservative vs Liberal debates.
Roxi made some good points. What needs to be addressed in the why administrations, both Republican and Democrat, have made doing business in the USA hard. With all the tariffs, cap and trade, agreements with foreign countries, high taxes, and a host of other government run programs, that make it hard for small, medium, and large businesses to, well stay in business.
Alot of small farmers were caught up in the production of crops (corn), for the bio-fuels. This has helped some, but ask anyone in the west who has driven though the mid-west, and one can see how fuel economy suffers using the corn fuels. This could be the fuel of the future, or it could turn out to be a big failure.
As for Robert (KKK) Byrd, I love how the Dems speak about him with reverence. Yea he was a Senator for a 100 years, but voted in by who. The same people the Dems always compare us Reps too, a bunch of backwoods Rednecks.
Also what Roxi pointed out about it being more profitable to buy cattle from other countries. Gee, I wonder why. To many restrictions and taxes making it easier to do business elsewhere.
Roxi is very close to making a Tea Party moment, complaining about how tough it is to do business here in the USA. Roxi is on the right track. Rather than increase taxes on business’s, let’s lower taxes and make it easier for the big and the small, and everything in between to do business here. Sounds like a great way to increase the numbers of jobs, keep food and products American, and it would boost the economy.

I find it interesting that Roxi complains about small business being run out of town and can’t compete with big business. See Rox’s post in the “Is Cheney Dead Yet” blog. In that post, Roxi was against any private companies taking over any of the public run entities such as bridges and infrastructure rebuilding. From what I gather, Roxi wants the government to run and repair everything. Then in another blog, she is complaining about small businesses failing.
Remember the 1994 earthquake? Private contractors re-built the I-5 / 14 freeway interchange 4 months sooner than expected by state officials and Cal Trans. The contractor earned millions by finishing early and the economy of LA thrived on the opening of the interchange. What I find interesting, the government tried to take the contractor to court and did not want to pay the incentive of finishing the project early. That is government for ya.

Lanc, your kids will eventually forgive you. Sad that wheelchair you ate yourself into caused you to miss so much of their lives. Afterall what kid s proud of a grotesque fat parent in an electric scooter telling others how to live.
Lanc, your ankles swollen to what, like three times normal?

Yoga today at ten; it is a place for you to get your health back lanc. I would love to see you there. 24 hour fitness ave k make it or love that wheelchair. Heck if they have cut off your feet due to being so overweight I’m sure the instructor Michele could still give you instruction to extend your life. Or you can go to a hamburger joint and pack on another pound or three. In your case shoreside fries and triple thick chocolate shake.

I am in Spokane where my Daughter blessed me with my 3rd Grandson, her first child, on Saturday at 5:20 pm…
This forum is entertainment for those with REAL LIVES, for others it is their oxygen, because they have little else..
We are blessed and lucky that we do..
Congrats to you and your daughter..

Family is oxygen for everyone.
It is sad that some are not blessed with family and find this forum an opportunity to take out their frustrations.
I can remember vividly a blogger posting vile and very nasty comments about his mother in here, which I found disgusting.
Not surprising considering who the author was, but still a tragedy.
I wake up every morning knowing how fortunate I am and how sad it is that others are not. Seems to me like you do the same..

Am sorry y’all can’t read and depend so much on videos…
I said:
…It’s the Corporate Farms that have destroyed the small, independent family farms. …only to see one after one small, family farm.. go under (one right) after another.
“…*US meat you buy is full of hormones, brought to you by the Corporate Masters: Dow Chemical.*
“…Those who do not remember small farms closing across this country during the 80’s and 90’s are dumb fucks and should be put to pasture with the rest of the hormone induced herd.”
Large Corporate Farms who mass-produce plastic foods to your grocery stores took over the small family farms who sold locally, most without chemicals.
Their m.o. back then was primarily dairy farms, investing huge amts of cash for classy milking parlors that exceeded any QUANTITY local dairy farmers could produce. The price was then lowered, and starved out even more farms unable to compete, because of volumn.
Welfare for the Rich Corporate farms should cease, and only be available for small farmers.
Support your local Farmer’s Markets – or grow your own. Still isn’t illegal to grow your own, altho the corp’s are working on it…

roxi, I chose the video because I thought it’ll be easier to watch vs. a long transcript. You guys don’t get it, the radicals are depending our infighting to destroy what is left of America. Funny the first president of my church back in the 1800’s said our Constitution in the future would be dismantled piece by piece in the future. hmmm, he’s right…
For for info: Beck spends many sleepless nights reading many books to educate himself, how many of you could honestly say you do too?

avbb just doesn’t get it again…“Roxi was against any private companies taking over any of the public run entities such as bridges and infrastructure rebuilding. From what I gather, Roxi wants the government to run and repair everything. Then in another blog, she is complaining about small businesses failing.”
One example of Private Corporations doing Gov’t work is: soon after 9/11, Shrub’s gov’t hired 1,000 of private corporations to do OUR Top Secret Intelligence, instead of expanding the FBI & the CIA – to make it look like they weren’t expanding the gov.
There are now 2,000 corporations being paid to do Intel services, by the taxpayers, I might add; who report to the gov’t up to 50,000 documents a year, most on the same topic.
It became so profitable for General Dynamics, that they stopped manufacturing parts and went 100% into the taxpayer-funded cash-cow of Intel services.
Cons will argue that this is helping private business and keeping government small – they should also add that it’s keeping Americans broke!
Yes, we do NOT need 2,000 Corporations doing what 2 agencies should be doing!
Also, persons working for these corporations will be and are more faithful to the corp’s than “For The People” – hence, we have very wealthy corps and powerful PACS making the Intel decisions – NOT our gov’t which IS and represents the people.
